  2. Installation PLATFORM C3 + motion control VRR09 Eddy Jans

  3. 2 detector halves with each 21 individually commissioned • VELO-modules are installed in the VELO-vessel since • Oct. ’07 • 2*42 Repeater boards • 2*7 Control boards • 2*42 TELL1’s with 4 ARx cards each • 2*3 Temperature boards • 10+11 A3009 CAEN LV-modules, 3*48 V power supply • 2*3 EHQ 607n-F Iseg HV-modules • 2*1 Maraton power supply • 1 Interlock Box • vacuum system + PLC-system for control • motion system + PLC-system for control • cooling plant + PLC-system for control • All installed, cabled and debugged individually and later • operated collectively. VRR09 Eddy Jans

  4. Ancillary equipment and silicon sensors • 84 (100%) working HV-channels • 84 (100%) working LV-channels • 84 (100%) working Control Board channels • 336 (100%) working Temperature Board channels • 84 (100%) working Repeater Boards • 80 (95%) working TELL1s. This week  84 (100%) • 170.0k (98.8%) usable strips. Consistent method to measure and determinedead/noisy strips is under construction. VRR09 Eddy Jans

  5. ECS and Tuning • Individual PVSS-projects developed over the last 3 years • Collection of projects and FSMs operational since 8 months • Continuously under development. Main remaining points: - Tuning of the timing: • * ADC sampling point Done • * Trigger and TestPulse via Control Board and TELL1 • - TELL1 recipes: default, TP, NTP, ZS, NZS, ErrorBanks • - Tuning of the gains • - Improve on the OPC-server of Iseg • - Extend software interlocks • - Develop procedures for data taking, analysis, parameter • determination, upload via XML-description to hardware • and database. • Concerns: experienced VELO-manpower, TELL1 support • Planning: ready by May 1 VRR09 Eddy Jans

  6. Organization and documentation • Internal progress reports and discussions in the weekly • VELO-commissioning meeting. Also used for planning of • activities for coming week(s). (minutes, project • plans, etc.) • Invested a lot of effort in writing documentation, • operation manuals, power-up/power-down procedures • and VELO-shifters training • See: https://lbtwiki.cern.ch/bin/view/VELO/VELOOperatingManuals • ELOG and databases play a more and more important • role VRR09 Eddy Jans

  7. VELO status Vacuum • complex system of pumps, • valves and gauges to • provide: • good and reliable • vacuumin LHCb beam • pipe and VELO-detector • maintain small diff. • pressure between the • two volumes during • pump down and venting Functioned continuously according to specs during the last 2 years and various pumping/venting cycles. VRR09 Eddy Jans

  8. Pumpdown on June 18, 2008 It takes 3 hours till green big valve GV302 may be opened [mbar] 10-2 after 2 months of pumping detector volume 10-4 2x10-6 10-6 beam volume 10-8 3x10-9 0h00 6h00 12h00 VRR09 Eddy Jans

  9. Motion • Actual movement is • controlled by a • PLC-program • Precise position is • given by 3 resolvers: • XA, XC and Y • Reproducibility <10 mm • Interlocked with LHC • beam abort system. C-side VRR09 Eddy Jans

  10. Cooling cooling plant on C3 VELO detector shielding wall Heat out Heat out Condenser Heat in Heat in 60 m evaporator Heat exchanger 2-Phase Accumulator Restriction Pump 800 W cooling power/side available, while ≈400 W is needed VRR09 Eddy Jans Enthalpy

  12. Detector performance Noise performance of fully depleted sensors R-sensor F-sensor ____ raw noise ____ Common Mode Corrected noise VRR09 Eddy Jans

  13. Noise of collective power-up of VELO in the pit all R-sensors all F-sensors - No additional noise contribution due to collective powerup - Influence of nearby passing beam still needs to be seen VRR09 Eddy Jans

  14. S/N from ACDC3 R-sensors F-sensors - Noise measured in ACDC3 ≈ that in IP8 - Experimental setup and settings used in ACDC3 very comparable to those in IP8. So comparable gain expected  (S/N)pit ≈ (S/N)ACDC3 (to be confirmed with TP-data) VRR09 Eddy Jans

  15. DAQ • List of main items being worked on: • NZS-data (151 kB/side) and round robin mechanism • (select mode, data rate, etc. Ready by April 1) • run at high rate (# of TELL1s, network, # farm nodes, • TAE factor. Investigation ready by April 1) • error banks: generation, inspect contents, possibility to • generate NZS data if error bank present (Ready by April) VRR09 Eddy Jans

  16. Lab 8 The need to be able to test the electronics of a VELO-slice in the on-line environment made us set up “Lab 8” in the VELO-office on the second floor above the LHCb control room. Now we have a testing and development area, decoupled from the real VELO-detector. VRR09 Eddy Jans

  17. Spares situation • Repeater boards: 2 for 84, • 20 for 84 per April • TELL1s: 7 for 84 • ARx cards: 20 for 336 • 80 for 336 per April • Control boards: 2 for 14 • Temperature boards: 2 for 6 • A3009 CAEN LV-modules: 1 for 21 • 6 for 21 per June • 48 V power supply: 1 for 3 • Iseg HV-modules: 2 for 6 • Interlock Box: 1 for 1 • motion, vacuum, cooling PLC-systems: at least 1 for • each module type. VRR09 Eddy Jans

  18. Summary • Commissioning of the VELO-detector is well advanced. • Main things still to be finished are: • - Create sufficient hot spares of all crucial components • Development of tuning scripts (timing, gain, bad strip • list), parameter determination and corresponding • uploading to hardware and databases • - Increase % of working channels (mainly TELL1s) • - DAQ action list: NZS-data, high rate, error banks VRR09 Eddy Jans
