  2. Outline • SD -> HWC transition • What has to be commissioned • RRR measurement and other special tests • Schedule • Shifts

From SD to HC • SD coordination will manage a given sectors up to the de-condemnation of the power converters • This includes ElQA of the main circuits and cable connection • “Yellow papers” handled by SD coordination • Once in the hands of HWC coordination, the whole sector is considered ready-to-power • Correctors left behind (if any) will be managed case by case • From that moment, locking of the circuits (if ever needed) would be managed by HWC coordination

  4. What has to be powered? • Whatever has not been commissioned to 3.5 TeV equivalent current. The list boils down to: • All RQD/F and RB • Very few remaining correctors • Mains: standard procedure + type tests required by nQPS • Triplets: all commissioned to 3.5 TeV but test procedure to be completed for 5 IT • Correctors: the list of circuits that follows has been obtained merging info form MP3 (Jean-Philippe, Nuria) and HWC results and confirmed by optics expert • To be done in the shade of the mains, not accounting in the time-budget

  5. RB and RQD/F (re-)Commissioning Extra step (energy extraction) at 4 kA Are we going to have the calorimetric step?

  6. Triplets • Only 5 not fully commissioned in 2009 • RQX.R1 (quench heater problem) has reduced current but still enough for 3.5 • extra DCCT in triplet in R8 and L1 to measure the individual currents

  7. Correctors Circuits not fully commissioned from the list in the HWC commissioning web page

  8. Correctors Circuits fully commissioned but that we may consider to (partially) re-commission The remaining circuits commissioned with reduced parameters are fine for 3.5 TeV operations

  9. RRR measurement test (MK&BF) Motivation: The value of RRR has direct impact on the energy the LHC can safely run at • Idea: measure resistance of some busbars by means of nQPS injecting low current at higher temperature • 3 controllable power converters in parallel with main PC • Dipoles: 10A-300V • Quads: 10A-10V • Voltage measurements done using nQPS in logging mode • Temperature should rise to at least 10K. Logging via the available sensors • The duration of the test will be as long as cryo needs to raise to ˜10K (2 days?) and back down again (2 days?) • Test to be performed as soon as nQPS is qualified and phase I is done • The suggested place is sec 81: • Pros: first coming available (no impact on the schedule), the only one with all the T sensors installed • Contras: no warm temperature measurement available

  10. PGC • All steps to be done in all sectors (reminder: at this stage we have an heater-provoked quench on MB at high current) • To be done after finishing the tests on the individual circuits • As last year, transition phase between HWC and operations. Some contingency in the schedule

Shifts • 2 shifts mode as soon as powering tests start (Thursday) • Weekend shifts since the beginning (BUT for next Sunday) • Night shifts starting on January 27 • Shifts during conferences: • Evian: 2 “extended” day shifts (MZ as EiC) • Chamonix (25 and 26 Jan): either only 1 shift per day and/or days devoted to accesses and software updates • Access shift: QPS-cable shift starts at 6.30, how to deal with that? • Regular MP3 shifts during phase II and I • Do we need EPC shifts?

  13. Special tests • Type test on one 120A circuit (1 whole day) by pulling cables to feed the circuit with a 600A power converter (Y.Thurel) • Other special tests: • measurement of RQ current ripple • voltage across switches for RB and RQF/D

  14. Conclusions • 2010 HWC campaign about to start • Schedule looks sound and feature some contingency • More precise time estimation as soon as nQPS will be set operative in the first sectors
