  1. Wisdom From the Book of Proverbs (Proverbs 4:7) Wisdom is supreme. Get wisdom. Yes, though it costs all your possessions, get understanding. (WEB)

  2. What is a Proverb? • The word ‘proverb’ (mischele) means ‘to be like, a comparison; noting likeness in things unlike.” A wise saying. • Characteristics: brief, concrete, general truth, diverse applications. • Authors: Solomon; The wise men (ch. 22:17-24:34); Agur (ch. 30); Lemuel (ch. 31) • This practical knowledge is one of the greatest needs of our hour. • His concern is the everyday need of an applied religion.

  3. Moral Issues: Adultery • Many proverbs are devoted to warning against sexual sins. • Verse for verse, more consideration is given to this subject than in any other book of the Bible. • The seductress: “her end” - Proverbs 23:18; 5:11; 14:12, 13; 16:25; 19:20; 20:21; 23:18, 32; 24:14, 20; 25:8; 29:21

  4. Wisdom To Help Marriages • The Enticements of the Adulteress (7:4-23) • The Deception of Adultery (5:1-6; 9:17) • The Price of Adultery (5:7-14) • The Price of Adultery (6:20-35) • The Deterrent to Adultery (5:8; 15-23) • The Warning (7:24-27)

  5. God’s Regulation: Sexual Relations • Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge. (Hebrews 13:4 NKJV)

  6. Listen To Wisdom! • My son, be attentive to my wisdom, incline your ear to my understanding; that you may keep discretion, and your lips may guard knowledge. For the lips of a loose woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps follow the path to Sheol; she does not take heed to the path of life; her ways wander, and she does not know it. And now, O sons, listen to me, and do not depart from the words of my mouth. (Proverbs 5:1-7 RSV)

  7. Stay Away From Her Or You Will Regret It! • Keep your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house; lest you give your honor to others and your years to the merciless; lest strangers take their fill of your strength, and your labors go to the house of an alien; and at the end of your life you groan, when your flesh and body are consumed, and you say, "How I hated discipline, and my heart despised reproof! I did not listen to the voice of my teachers or incline my ear to my instructors. I was at the point of utter ruin in the assembled congregation." (Proverbs 5:8-14 RSV)

  8. The Price of Adultery (5:8-14) • Adulterous love appears to be free, but it has its price. (Gal. 6:7,8) • The loss of one’s honor and dignity (5:9) • It sacrifices all the years of one’s labor (5:10; 29:3) • Body consumed with disease (5:11) • Filled with remorse after it is too late (5:12,13) - Regrets • Total ruin, disgrace, humiliation and even death (5:14)

  9. The Deterrent To Adultery: Look For Love At Home! • Drink water from your own cistern, flowing water from your own well. Should your springs be scattered abroad, streams of water in the streets? Let them be for yourself alone, and not for strangers with you. Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely hind, a graceful doe. Let her affection fill you at all times with delight, be infatuated always with her love. (Proverbs 5:15-19 RSV) Wisdom About Marriage!

  10. Remember: God Is Watching! • For why should you, my son, be enraptured by an immoral woman, And be embraced in the arms of a seductress? For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, And He ponders all his paths. His own iniquities entrap the wicked man, And he is caught in the cords of his sin. He shall die for lack of instruction, And in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray. (Proverbs 5:20-23 NKJV)

  11. The Warning From Wisdom: • Now therefore, listen to me, my children; Pay attention to the words of my mouth: Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways, Do not stray into her paths; For she has cast down many wounded, And all who were slain by her were strong men. Her house is the way to hell, Descending to the chambers of death. (Proverbs 7:24-27 NKJV)

  12. God’s Regulation: Sexual Relations • Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge. (Hebrews 13:4 NKJV)
