  2. What is a motive appeal? • A motive appeal is an image or idea that appeals to a basic want or need of the listener.

  3. Self Preservation • This is the desire to survive • It also includes the desire for safety and security • This motivates us to eat healthy, buy safe products, exercise, etc. Example: Vovlo cars are the safest for your family.

  4. Pride • This is the need for a feeling of personal worth or accomplishment. • This motivates us to get good grades, win awards, wear new clothes, etc. Example: Winners wear Jordans.

  5. Personal Enjoyment • This is the desire for beauty, comfort, and fun. • We don’t just want to survive; we want to enjoy our lives • This motivates us to buy things that make our lives more fun. Example: Take the party with you in your IPod!

  6. Love and Affection • This is the need to give and receive love. • This motivates us to give to charities or flirt with the opposite sex Example: For only pennies a day, you can help a starving child.

  7. Acquisition and Saving • This is an appeal to your wallet or piggy bank • It motivates us to use coupons, get a job, or shop at sales Example: Call in the next 10 minutes and save $10.00!

  8. Adventure and Curiosity • This is the desire for things out of the ordinary • It motivates us to read, explore, watch movies, etc. Example: For the experience of a lifetime, visit the mountains of Peru.

  9. Loyalty • This is faithfulness to a person, organization, or place • It motivates us to fly the US flag, cheer for our home team, or support a family member. Example: Tiger fans use Tiger brand footballs.

  10. Imitation • This is the need to be like others. • It motivates us to follow clothing and hair styles, go along with the crowd, etc. • We are likely to want to buy something if a celebrity recommends it. Example: Tiger Woods uses Pro Flight; so should you!

  11. Reverence • This is a desire to look up to something. • It motivates us to support our church or country. Example: Americans always support our troops.

  12. Creating • This is the desire to make something ourselves. • It motivates us to create crafts and make things for ourselves. Example: Make your own personalized tote bags.

  13. Advertising Techniques • Slogan: a memorable phrase that uses motive appeals to persuade Example: Nike: Just Do It Jingle: a memorable song that uses motive appeals to persuade Example: “Five Dollar, Five Dollar, Five Dollar Foot Loooooong”
