Enigmatic Crex Crex: The Fascinating Corncrake

The Corncrake is a bird with inconspicuous rusty-brown coloring, resembling a large pigeon with short wings and tail. Both males, females, and young ones look alike. They live discreetly but are audibly present, especially at dusk and night, with their distinct repetitive "crex-crex" call. They inhabit wet meadows, hedgerows, and uncut grass margins. They thrive among tall plant stems, where they find shelter, food, and mates. Omnivorous, they feed on seeds, insect larvae, spiders, and mollusks. Watch out! If you have Corncrakes on your property, avoid mowing until August when the young have left their nests. SYMPATHETIC ANIMAL.

Nevýrazné rezavě hnědé zbarvení. Velký asi jako holub, krátký ocas a křídla. Samec, samice a mladí jedinci se navzájem neliší.
Mládě…
Žije skrytě, ale je slyšet. Za soumraku a v noci nepřetržitě vrže. „crex-crex, crex-crex, crex-crex“
Areál rozšíření
Obývá zamokřené louky, remízky, nesečené okraje luk. Nejraději se proplétá mezi stonky vysokého porostu, kde nalézá úkryt, potravu a samičku .
Je všežravý. Sbírá různá semena, larvy hmyzu, pavouky, měkkýše…
Pozor! Máte-li na pozemku chřástala, sečte až v srpnu. To již mláďata nesedí v hnízdě.
