Ineligible and Ineffective • 25 eligible communities under Food Mail Program reduced to 7 under NNC • 8 NAN communities are “partially” eligible to receive an insulting and ineffective $0.05 / kg subsidy on healthy foods • 17 remote communities in Nishnawbe Aski Nation ineligible for subsidy or education funds under NNC

  4. Increased Availability? Incentives for retailers to focus on low value foods

  5. Increased Availability? • Hunting and fishing supplies are no longer subsidized • Gardening equipment and seeds are not subsidized, also ineligible under NNC Education Program • Consumer choice is constrained to eligible northern retailers and southern suppliers

Recommendations • Subsidize local food production • Hunting, fishing, trapping, gardening, and livestock • Ontario representative on NNC Advisory Board • Subsidize non-market based traditional foods • Allow consumers to choose where they shop, with subsidies on all eligible foods flown into eligible communities
