  1. CANADA BECOMES A NATION The events that led to us Canadians to being an independent nation

  2. The 1919 Peace Conference • This was big! • It was the first thing that came up where it was hinted that we would become an independent nation • The winning side of world one decided what was the best punishment for Germany’s “wrong doings.”

  3. 1922 Chanak • British soldiers were fighting with turkey and trying to occupy Chanak • Canada said no to the British request for troops • Mackenzie king was the prime minister at this time

  4. 1923 The Halibut treaty • First treaty signed as a nation independent from Britain • It was signed between Canada and the U.S • It gave guidelines for fishing to preserve the marine life

  5. 1926 Imperial Conference • Gatherings that took place with the British Empire • Now called Colonial Conferences • This was important because it dealt with the equality of Nations in the British Empire • Canada at this point was on the hunt for its very own flag • Mackenzie king talked about Canada's independence at this Conference
