  2. Like the skin on an apple Crust • Made up of 1% of the earth • Made up of the continents and ocean basins • 35-70 km thick (continents)/ 5-10 km thick (ocean basins) • 32 degrees Fahrenheit • Made of lower density rocks composed of oxygen and silicon • Weakest layer

  3. Mantle • Separated into the upper and lower mantle • Where most of the internal heat of the earth is located • About 2900 km thick • 1832 degrees Fahrenheit • Consists of rocks composed of elements oxygen, silicon, and magnesium.

  4. Outer Core • Made up of liquid • composed of iron, nickel, and minor sulfur • Very dense/heaviest part of earth • 6692 degrees Fahrenheit

  5. Inner Core • Solid • Composed mainly of iron • 7772 degrees Fahrenheit • Temperatures and pressures so great that the metals are squeezed together and are not able to move.
