  2. Mother Nature was in Control • Earthquake in Haiti • Killed thousands • Orphaned children • Destroyed infrastructure • Mudslide in Peru • Tourists stranded • Military helicopter rescue

  3. And weather woes abounded • Thunderstorm contributed to airplane crash • Ethiopian Airliner • Down in Mediterranean after take-off • Winter storms caused vehicle crashes • Bus in Nova Scotia • Passenger vehicles across Canada

  4. And people responded warmly • Aid to Haiti • Rescue teams from around the world • Government sends aid • Other nations welcome orphans

  5. Although conflict raged elsewhere • US drone missile killed 5 in Afghanistan • Known Taliban leader suspected dead in Pakistan • Proposed US – Taiwan arms deal angered China • China suspects US supports Taiwan’s claim of sovereignty • North Korea declared no-sail zone • Is it really bad weather, or just a border concern?

  6. But on a happier note? • Apple had good news • Reported record earnings • Announced release of new high tech communication tool – the iPad tablet

  7. So what’s a citizen to do? • Donate to help those less fortunate • Ongoing, as well as disaster relief • Become more informed on international issues • Understand who is involved and what the conflicts are • Be aware of possible consequences • Share my views on international affairs • Write a letter to the editor • Write to my MP about Canada’s role in international affairs
