Tiene plumaje ceniciento azulado en la cabeza y cuello, pardo con manchas rojizas en el lomo, gris vinoso en la garganta, pecho y vientre, y negro, cortado por rayas blancas, en el cuello, pico agudo, negruzco y pies rojizos. Es comn en Espaa, donde se presenta por la primavera, y pasa a frica en otoo. .
