(because) • In Lent I, Catholics ….. • Give up things, give to others – share, love, send money to CAFOD, Good Shepherd • I have given up sweets because it is Lent. • I have given up chocolate to help others / to be more like Jesus • Good Friday – What do Catholics do? • Go to Church because Jesus died (for us) - to listen to how Jesus died - to remember that Jesus died (for us) Easter Sunday – What do Christians do? I celebrate because God gave Jesus new life Christians (I, we) celebrate because Jesus is alive.

Show understanding of how religious belief shapes life Why is being a Christian about self-giving? because Jesus taught us that ‘loving one another’ (Jn 13: 34) is done through our self – giving (putting others first) = the foot washing Jn 13: 4-9, 12-15. The best e.g. of this = Jesus’ death on the cross This is why we: forgive – Jesus forgave the thief Lk 23: 39-43 and forgives us Lk 22: 19-20; Mt 26: 28 This is why we: help those in need – Jesus did this, ‘feedings’, ‘healings’ and in connection to Mt 25: 31-40 Jesus dies hungry, thirsty, a stranger, without clothes, a prisoner. So by giving to others we give to Jesus. BEATITUDES: identification of these in life of Jesus and Christian

How did he live out his religious beliefs? (Choose specific events, stories e.g. his Temptations, his struggle in Gethsemane, his reciting of Psalm 22 at the moment of his death) Why was he killed?
