  1. Conversion Factors and Measurement Systems Honors Math – Grade 7

  2. Problem of the Day At a constant velocity, a space probe has traveled 1,536,000 km in one day since it was released from the Mother Ship. In 5 more hours, the probe will come in view of the moon of a planet and begin to transmit images of it to Earth. How far from the Mother Ship will the probe have traveled before sending the first images to Earth? What are the important facts? To find how far the space probe will have traveled, write and solve a proportion.

  3. In a proportion, the order of the labels is both ratios needs to be the same. Method 2: Use Like Units Method 1: Use Unlike Units

  4. A proportion can be used to solve problems that involve converting from one unit of measure to another. An astronaut’s pulse rate is closely monitored by ground control following take-off. In the first 3 minutes, a rate of 120 heartbeats per minute or less is normal. What is the number of times the astronaut’s heart should beat during this period for her pulse to be normal? A conversion factor is a rate of equal quantities that is used to multiply a quantity when converting from one unit of measure to another. Identify the conversion factor.

  5. Conversion factors can be used to rename metric and customary units of measure. How many centimeters long is a 1-yd stretch of fabric if there are 2.54 cm in 1 inch? Identify the conversion factor.

  6. Write a proportion to represent the situation. Then solve. A kilowatt-hour is 3,600,000 joules. How many joules are in 7 kilowatt-hours? There are 640 acres in one square mile. How many square miles are in 1000 acres? How many square yards are in 43,560 square feet?

  7. Write a proportion to represent the situation. Then solve. There are 4 quarts in a gallon. How many quarts are in 21 gallons? One gallon of water weighs 8.3 pounds. How many pounds do 3 gallons of water weigh? How many miles have you traveled if you have gone 1320 ft?

  8. Write a proportion to represent the situation. Then solve. Within 1 inch, there are 2.54 centimeters. How many centimeters are in 1 foot? Density is the amount of mass of an object per unit volume. A piece of iron weighs 45 ounces and has a volume of 10 cubic inches. Given that each ounce has a mass of 28.35 grams, determine the density of iron in grams per cubic inch.
