  2. What is Benchmarking? • Rate building energy performance • Score (percentile) • Energy index (per sq.ft.) • National EPA ENERGY STAR method • Based on annual energy use • Physical efficiency (building, equipment) • Operational efficiency

  3. Why Do State Buildings? • Exec Order S-20-04 • Goal: Reduce energy use by 20% by 2015 • Easiest way to measure progress • Easy and inexpensive to benchmark

  4. How Is It Done? • Appoint staff to do it • Create building accounts on EPA website • Enter Data: • Building type, occupancy • ZIP code • Building size (sq.ft.) • Operating hours, # of computers • 12 months utility billing data • Group buildings • by agency, region, state, etc. • Get score and group reports

  5. What’s Next? • Measure progress toward 2015 goals • Automate data upload process • Enhance reporting • Research on advanced benchmarking
