Benchmarking Defined • Benchmarking is the documentation of building energy use over time (e.g. monthly) • “…a beginning step in managing a building’s energy cost, one that should motivate the building’s owner or manager to take actions to improve the building’s energy profile.” (CEC 2005) Benchmarking System for California Commercial Buildings - Plan, Timetable, and Recommendations, CEC Report CMF-400-2005-051-CMF, September, 2005

How is benchmarking useful? • Portfolio Manager gives users the ability to: • Track energy use over time • View facility information in customized reports • Share your facility information with Agencies and the State • Apply for an Energy Star Building label • Portfolio Manager gives the state the ability to: • View and aggregate energy use by Agency or State • Track State performance goals (e.g. 20% reduction goal)

  5. Benchmarking Task #1 • Annual energy usage “baseline” • Provide: Facility info and energy data • Receive: Normalized source kBtu/ft2 • California State baseline year is 2003 • Use to track 20% energy reduction goal

  7. Benchmarking Task #2 • Energy Performance Rating • Percentile score between 1 and 100 • Normalized by weather, building size, location, etc. • 75+ for Energy Star Buildings Award • Use to compare buildings to each other

  9. Other Benchmarking Benefits • Track efficiency improvement effects • Track multiple energy & water meters • Customize meter names and info • Monitor energy and water costs • Share building data • Set investment priorities

  12. 1. State energy account info • Please assign staff responsible for benchmarking and send contact info to Mike Langley at DGS • Mike.Langley@dgs.ca.gov • DGS will provide you with a list of your State facilities based on the State Property Inventory list

State energy usage data • XML-capable utilities • Automated monthly upload (best) • Participating non-XML utilities • Utility-provided Excel spreadsheet (okay) • Non-participating, non-XML utilities • Customer-entered energy-bill data (ouch) We are doing everything possible to avoid this last option

Data Release Forms (1) • Required to automate XML data upload • XML-capable utilities: • PG&E, SDG&E, SoCalGas, SCE, SMUD • LADWP waiting on system upgrades • Send • Wet signature to your account representative • Copy to DGS • Available at: • http://www.h-m-g.com/downloads/EnergyBenchmarking
