  1. Homeroom Drop everything and read!

  2. Warm Up • Quiz • In your notes section, draw a picture that looks like a simple mountain

  3. Write in your notebook • Altitude: the height above sea level As altitude increases density decreases As altitude decreases density increases • Density: the amount of mass in a given volume of air • In notes from last class • THINK: air molecule • Measuring Mercury barometer: uses liquid to measure air pressure Aneroid barometer: uses a spring to measure air pressure

  4. Air Pressure and Density Review • How does air pressure change with temperature?

  5. Air Pressure and Density Review • Where is air pressure the greatest? The least? • Where in the atmosphere is the air most dense? Least dense?

  6. Word meanings • Tropo means “turning” • Strato means “spreading out” • Meso means “middle” • Thermo means “heat”

  7. Troposphere • FACTS • Layer closest to Earth’s surface • 80% of the atmosphere’s mass is here • This is where weather occurs • Warmed from the ground below • Temperature decreases as you go up! • Altitude 0-6 miles

  8. Stratosphere • FACTS • Airplanes fly here • Contains the ozone • The gases in the ozone trap heat • Temperature increases at you go up! • Altitude 6-31 miles

  9. Mesosphere • FACTS • Air is extremely thin! • Less than .1% of the atmosphere’s mass • Meteors are burnt up here • Temperature decreases as you rise Altitude 31-56 miles

  10. Thermosphere • FACTS • Starts at 56 miles and goes into outer space • Air molecules become very hot because of solar radiation • Two minor layers (Ionosphere and the Exosphere) • The temperature increases as you rise! Altitude: 56 miles and up!
