  2. Warm-up How does the body maintain homeostasis with the skeletal and muscular systems?

  3. Breathing Inquiry Lab • 1) place balloon inside of small bottle opening and fold over the edges • 2) Put piece of plastic bag over the large opening and secure with a rubber band • 3) Put the Bandaid on the bottom of plastic bag and pull down. • Answer the following questions: • How do you think the lungs move when you inhale? • What type of organ is beneath your lungs to help you inhale and exhale?

  4. The respiratory system • Functions to get oxygen from the environment and remove carbon dioxide and other wastes from your body.

  5. What you breath in • When you take in a breath: • 20%Oxygen • <1% Carbon Dioxide • 80% Nitrogen

  6. What Else does it do for the body? • o Speaking • o Clear particles from the nose and throat • o Sighing • o Yawning • o Crying • o Sneezing • o Coughing • o Hiccups

  7. Exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen • High levels of carbon dioxide will damage/ destroy cells • Cells need proper levels of both (Homeostasis!) • If levels of C02 or 02 change, your brain tells you to breath faster or slower!

  8. Cellular respiration • Cells use oxygen in chemical reactions to make energy! • Cellular respiration uses the digestive and circulatory systems • Glucose(sugar) is also needed in CR • Cells use oxygen and glucose to make energy! • Occurs in the mitochondria!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Structures of the respiratory system! • As you create the structures out of dough, write the description beside them.

  10. Epiglottis • prevent food and liquids from entering the lungs

  11. Trachea • tube surrounded by cartilage rings

  12. Bronchial Tubes • carry air into each lung

  13. Lung • Two large organs on either side of the heart where gas exchange (respiration) takes place.

  14. Alveoli • exchange the gases in the lungs

  15. Diaphragm • Diaphragm: contracts and moves down, allowing the lungs to expand
