  5. Different Parts of the LIbrary • Bag Check-in-Leave all bags and books. No ice pops, open drinks or food. • Circulation Desk- Check books out and in. Students return books here to the librarian. Direct students to the different sections. Keeps track of how many children in the library at a given time. No more than 15 students.

  6. Con’t. • Student Section Easy: Typically grade K-2nd. Few words and lots of pictures. Medium: Typically 3rd -4th . Several sentences and smaller print. Sometimes fewer pictures. Difficult: Typically 5th-6th. Full pages of words and generally no pictures.

  7. Con’t. • Reference Section Science Health Social Studies These Books have a red dot and “Cannot” be checked out. *Exceptions for research projects and assignments. Students need to have their teachers notify Mrs. Christopher, Mrs. Graham, or Ms. Howe.

  8. Con’t. • Educational Section Poetry Caribbean African Art • Teacher Section-Students are not allowed to read books from this section. Let students know where the fiction and non-fiction student books are.

  9. Check Out System • Kindergarten: 1 book for 1 week starting 2nd Term. • 1st-4th: 2 books for 1 week. • 5th -6th:3 books for 1 week • Check -out Note Book:

  10. Reading in the Library • When students use books in the library but are not going to check them out, they should place them in the box labeled Books to Return next to the circulation desk.

  11. Book Etiquette 1. Wash your hands before reading a book. Clean hands = clean books! 2. Keep food and drinks away from books. 3. Turn pages from the top corner. 4. Do not write or draw on the pages of a library book. 5. Do not take books out in the rain, even if you have them in your backpack.

  12. Etiquette Con’t. 6. Mark your place in a book with a bookmark. Don't fold the pages of a book. 7. Carry your books in your backpack or bag. Water bottles should not be in your backpack with your books. 8. Keep your books in a safe place at home, where little brothers, sisters, or pets cannot touch them. 9. Do not bend the cover of a book backwards. Do not lay books face down when they are open. 10. Return your books to the library on time.

  13. Library Rules 1. Leave food and drinks on the check-in shelf. 2. Whisper and use inside voice when talking. 3. Students are not allowed to play or loiter. 4. Place books in the Books to Shelve box, and not back on the shelve. 5. Respect librarians, teachers and students.

  14. Working in the Library 1. Show up for your shift on time. 2. Put on your library badge and return it to the drawer at the end of your shift. 3. Help students and teachers find books. 4. Spend 5 mins. Sweeping and dusting. 5. Return books to their sections from the Books to Shelve Box 6. Check books In and Out to students and teachers. 7. Tidying the shelves

  15. Working in the Library Con’t. • Once you have cleaned and organized, and if no one needs your help you may do school work or read. • Keep your grades at a 60% or above. • Speak Standard English when working in the library. • Suggestions to improve the library are welcome.

  16. Key Skills and Attitudes: *Reliable *Punctual, *Careful *Friendly Manner *Shows Initiative *Good Communication Skills *Enjoys Books and Reading *Able to Follow Rules and *Hard-working.

  17. Incentives!!! • Thank you for wanting to work in the library!!! 1. Afternoon Movie with popcorn. 2. Gold, Silver and Bronze Certificates. 3. Small prizes for showing up and following the rules. 4. End of the year field trip.
