  17. Showcase Schools Environmental factors: not barriers but “supporters” in creating Nutrition-Friendly Schools

  18. Showcase Schools Team Nutrition funding, administered through the PA Department of Education, Division of Food and Nutrition was provided to pilot efforts to bring the influences together: Teams linking the cafeteria, classroom, and community were created at each school.

  19. Teams consisted of - students - health educators - teachers - foodservice personnel - parents - school nurses - coaches - community leaders - other nutrition supporters

  20. RATIONALE

  21. School’s Role From the October 22, 2002 School Board News, a publication of the National School Boards Association: If the United States is serious about addressing the obesity crisis, schools must play a role in creating an environment that fosters healthy nutrition and physical activity.

  22. Linking Classroom, Cafeteria, and Community From “The Team Nutrition Pilot Study: Lessons Learned from Implementing a Comprehensive School-Based Intervention”, a report published by USDA in the Journal of Nutrition Education in 2002: Relationships formed with parents, local businesses, other educational institutions, health organizations, and the media offer promise for helping to sustain nutrition education efforts.

  23. Multiple Channels Multiply Links Evaluation of the Team Nutrition pilot communities showed that working through multiple channels -- foodservice initiatives home activities classroom activities school-wide events community programs and events media events and coverage contributed to increased success.

  24. Advantages for School Foodservice • Seen as part of education process • Seen as more than support staff • Provides basis for placing value on the word and work of the SFS department • Improves status of program
