  1. Take out notebook and answer walk-in. What are some similarities and differences among animals?

Classifying Animals Directions • Spread out and read the animal cards. • Use the list of phylum characteristics paper to decide what phylum best fits for each of the animal cards. • Make an organized chart for each phylum with the card numbers. • Ask for the key to see how accurate you were. • Answer the analysis questions.

  4. Analysis Questions (complete sentences) • Did your categories change when you looked at the key and followed the biologists’ correct system of phyla? How? • Look carefully at the phylum cards to see how biologists group these animals. What types of characteristics are used to group animals into phyla? • Animals without backbones are called invertebrates. How many invertebrate phyla were in this activity? List these phyla.
