  10. Opening Versicles

  11. L This is the day which the Lord has made; C let us rejoice and be glad in it. L From the rising of the sun to its setting, C the name of the Lord is to be praised. L Better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere; C I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

  12. L Make me to know Your ways, O Lord. C Teach me Your paths. L Sanctify us in You truth. C Your Word is truth. L From the rising of the sun to its setting, C the name of the Lord is to be praised. C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

  13. Collect of the Day L Lord Jesus, in Your earthly ministry You were loved and served by devoted women, including Mary and Martha in whose home You enjoyed rest and refreshment. Give us grace to recognize and affirm the varied and singular gifts You bestow on women (and especially upon [name of women’s organization]) that Your kingdom may be extended, Your Church enriched, and Your people lovingly served to the glory of Your holy name; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen.

  14. Readings From Holy Scripture

  15. Reading L A reading from Revelation, the twenty-first chapter. 9Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, 11having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as

  16. Reading crystal. 12It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed— 13on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. 14And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

  18. Holy Gospel P The Holy Gospel according to Saint John, the third chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 22After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and was baptizing. 23John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized 24(for John had not yet been put in prison).

  19. Holy Gospel 25Now a discussion arose between some of John’s disciples and a Jew over purification. 26And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.” 27John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. 28You yourselves bear me witness, that I said,

  20. Holy Gospel ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’ 29The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. 30He must increase, but I must decrease.” P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ.

  21. Responsory

  35. The Office of Wife “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” Revelation 21:9 To understand the calling (vocation) of the husband we contemplated ___________ So, to understand the calling of the wife we will now contemplate the ___________ All Christians are called to be “little Christ’s” to one another in any vocation. The wife is summoned to specifically be the “little church”

  36. The whole church is called to be Christ’s bride. Scripture calls all people feminine in relationship to the masculinity of God. Therefore, the office of wife stands as an embodiment of the natural order for everyone. So, one’s understanding of wives will be colored by one’s understanding of church. Correctly – the church (and thus the wife) are to be recipients of love, sacrifice, and commitment.

  37. The family is designed as an earthly manifestation of the gospel… giving and receiving are free Outside the home, one works to receive and in working also gives…but inside the home, no payment is expected for what is given or received. Husbands also receive – as human beings, members of the church – but are specifically called in marriage to play the Christ-like role as a giver. Wives, playing the churchlike role, are called to receive from their husbands

  38. We often fail to see the vocational elements of receiving • 1 John 4:10; 19-21 • God’s love for us creates faith toward God, which bears fruit in love and service to our neighbor • The Christian responds to the love of God expressed in Christ’s sacrifice in faith, which then manifests itself in love for God. • Ephesians 5:33 • The wife responds to her husband’s love with respect, which then grows into love for him. We could say a woman has ‘faith’ in her husband rather than love. • “She loves because he first loved her”

  41. Prayer L Gathered in the name of Jesus and assured of His promised presence, let us call on our heavenly Father for ourselves, for our brothers and sisters in Christ throughout the world, and for all people. P That God defend His holy church against the gates of hell, beating back every attack of Satan, who seeks to thwart the coming of God’s kingdom, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P That God raise up among us a zeal to take the Good News to the ends of the earth, calling forth suitable individuals to travel to distant lands and leading us to give generously to support them in their proclamation of the Word of life, let us pray to the Lord: CLord, have mercy. P That God bless our congregations, granting us pastors who faithfully dispense the mysteries of God and who joyfully serve the flock under their care through prayer and visitation, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy.

  42. P That God grant us repentant hearts to receive the life and salvation He offers in the body and blood of Christ, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy.  P That God grant us thankful hearts, leading us always to recognize the bountiful goodness that He provides for us, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy.  P That God cause His grace to overflow in our lives through loving and faithful service to our neighbor, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy.  P That God defend our nation from every danger within and without, granting us honest and upright public servants, and that He would remember in kindness all who serve in our Armed Forces, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy.  P That God bless our nation in the final days leading up to the national election, granting all citizens wisdom as they cast their ballots, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy.

  43. P That God bless the harvest as it is gathered in, even as He sustains all those whose lives have been hurt by the drought of recent months, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P That God send healing to the sick [especially Luke Wilkins, Gary Lenn, Jodi Beswick & Ron Iske], strengthening them during their time of trial with His promise never to leave or forsake them, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P That God comfort those who mourn [especially the family of Harold Glazier], holding before them the resurrection of Christ as the sure guarantee of our own resurrection, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P That God set our hearts on things above as we await with all the faithful departed the return of Christ and the consummation of all things, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P Remembering the sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, we place our petitions at Your throne of mercy, trusting Your promise to hear our prayers and grant us all that we need for this life and the life to come, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. C Amen.

  44. Collect L Heavenly Father, grant Your mercy and grace to Your people in their many and various callings. Give them patience, and strengthen them in their Christian vocation of witness to the world and of service to their neighbor in Christ's name; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. C Amen.

  45. Evening Prayer • I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have graciously kept me this day; and I pray that You would forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong, and graciously keep me this night. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.

  46. 566 By Grace I'm Saved 1 By grace I’m saved, grace free and boundless; My soul, believe and doubt it not. Why waver at this word of promise? Has Scripture ever falsehood taught? So, then this word must true remain: By grace you too shall heaven obtain.

  47. 566 By Grace I'm Saved 2 By grace God’s Son, our only Savior, Came down to earth to bear our sin. Was it because of your own merit That Jesus died your soul to win? No, it was grace, and grace alone, That brought Him from His heav’nly throne.
