  3. What are the 4 Q’s?When creating lessons for the students we always consider:1. What are the students going to learn? What are they going to demonstrate?2. What strategies and techniques will be used to get them there?3. How will we know when they know it?4. What will we do if they didn’t learn it or already know it?

  4. Literacy Block Balanced Literacy includes: • Word Work (Words Their Way) • Writer’s Workshop/Grammar • Reader’s Workshop • Interactive Read Aloud (IRA)

  5. Word Work During word work students practice their differentiated spelling words.

  6. Reader’s Workshop Students spend the bulk of this time reading ‘Just Right Books’. I pull students or groups of students to focus on a specific reading skill that I feel the students need to work on or they are ready for.

  7. Writer’s Workshop and Grammar During writer’s workshop we spend 3 days on the writing process and how to create narratives. One day is spent on specific grammar needs such as parts of speech, what are run on sentences and how to extend sentences. One day is spent teaching cursive handwriting.

  8. Interactive Read Aloud During an interactive read aloud, students are practicing all of the reading skills that have been taught. They are responding to the text, predicting what might happen, drawing conclusionsandmaking mental movies of the action.

  10. Math • Addition of 2- and 3- digit numbers • Subtraction of 2- and 3- digit numbers • Measurement: Metric System • Multiplication/ Division • Area/Perimeter • Geometry • Fractions • Graphing/Data

  11. Daily Homework Math Homework is written in the agenda. Check a third grade teacher’s wiki for any missing student activity book pages. (SAB) What can you do? • Check agenda nightly • Review homework • Encourage independence, but help if needed Literacy Homework • 30 minutes of recorded nightly reading • Word Work

  12. Grading Scale/ Report Cards Grade Equivalencies 93-100= A 85-92= B 77-84= C 70-76= D 0-69=F Mastery= 80% Letter grades are an average of all work completed for the quarter

Highland Creek will no longer use the Accelerated Reader program….however, we will be doing the following to monitor students’ reading: • MAP assessment (show student performance in specific literacy standards) • Reading A – Z (online program where students read books/selections at their letter level and answer questions) • Running Records (teacher meets with students to monitor reading progress – assesses fluency, comprehension, vocabulary.) • Book Adventure (a FREE online reading program – very similar to AR – where your child can take comprehension quizzes on books. This program can be accessed at home and at school.) www.bookadventure.com 1. Click Log in/Register 2. Click Register Now! 3. Click Register as a Student 4. Click the green box: I want to register to use Book Adventure at HOME. 5. A username & password will be created for your child.

  14. When is “THE” test? May 20-23, 2014 Students will test on Tuesday and Wednesday of the week mentioned above. Third grade students will be tested in Math and Reading.
