Writing • 3 Main types • Argument writing, or persuasive writing • Informational Writing • Narrative Writing • Writing occurs daily, and in every subject • Big focus on paragraphs, using complete sentences, correct punctuation and capitals • Letters, stories, poems, persuasive essays, realistic fiction, fables, informational reports, scientific explanations, quick writes, reviews, writing to prompts, writing about reading

Word Study/Grammar • Rich Vocabulary in all content areas!!!!! • Nouns • Verbs • Homophones • Contractions • Adjectives • Prefixes and suffixes • r-controlled words, such as er,ir, or, ur • Word patterns such as CVCE, VVC, -igh • Plurals • Verb tense • Subject/verb agreement • Using commas, quotations, and end marks correctly

Reading • Making Meaning -Real aloud program that builds comprehension and community • Reader’s Workshop -Mini Lesson: specific reading strategy taught -Independent Reading *Teacher is working with students in guided reading groups, strategy groups, fluency groups, or conferring with individual students during this time. -Share: meet back together as a class to discuss the strategies students tried as they were reading.

  5. Science *Inquiry based curriculum *Hands-on activities and experiments *Students work in cooperative groups Four Units: -Life Structures -Water -Matter and Energy -Earth Materials *Benchmark Assessment given after each unit *Study guides will be sent home

  6. Third Grade Math Everyday Math Program • Common Core Standards • More Problem Solving and Application of Skills • Use of Homelinks 3-4 times weekly to reinforce classroom learning

  7. Within each classroom, teachers use a math workshop approach to learning: • Opportunities for review and reteaching • Opportunities for enrichment Assessment for organization of math workshop is through: • Exit Slips • Quizzes • Benchmark Tests • Homelinks • Daily Work • Class Participation

Content Areas • Read, write , and compare order numbers to 10,000 • Understand place value for 1s ,10s, 100s, 1,000s • Add and Subtract fluently to 999 • Multiply and solve related division problems to 10x10 • Recognize and name equivalent fractions • Add and subtract fractions with like denominators • Measure and use units for length, weight, temperature and time • Understand area and perimeter, apply in problems • Estimate area and perimeter • Solve Measurement problems (money, time, length, temp., weight • Identify, describe, compare and classify 2 dimensional shapes • Identify, describe, compare and classify 3 dimensional shapes • Compose and decompose triangles and rectangles to form other shapes • Make, read and interpret bar graphs
