  1. EO Data Portal Task Team Status Presentation to WGISS & Subgroup Meeting Kiev, September, 2005 Wyn Cudlip BNSC/QinetiQ wcudlip@space.qinetiq.com

  2. EO Data Portal Aims • To co-ordinate CEOS-member activities in the area of improving access to both global and local EO datasets. • To encourage the use of OGC standards to support the interoperability of data services. • To prototype OGC-based web-services in order to generate Guidelines & Lessons learnt Documents to assist with the implementation of operational systems. • To maintain a EODP homepage containing links to the OGC-compliant data servers of CEOS members.

  3. History • Original idea to improve access to Landsat Global Mosaic data (1975, 1990, 2000) and to SRTM global 90m-resolution digital elevation data (DEM) • Sometimes referred to as CLASP • CEOS Landsat and SRTM Project • Plan to go beyond access to rgb data: use OGC WCS for access to the Landsat and SRTM data • Renamed To EO Data Portal Task Team to broaded scope and make idea more attractive to CEOS Plenary

  4. EO Data Portal Activities EODP TT EODP homepage Other initiatives e.g. Digital Asia WGCV Test Sites Other initiatives Global datasets USGS Coverages CLASP Onearth JPL/NASA ICEDS GMU/LAITS Visualisation WorldWind AJAX/OGC Other datasets

  5. EODP Homepage • Links to: • CLASP • OGC compliant servers page • Global datasets • USGS Coverages map • WGISS Menu ?

  6. OGC Compliant Servers Page • Expert users need more than simple visualisation client • EODP intends to provide comprehensive list of CEOS-member OGC-compliant servers • Provide links to • Service introductory webpage • Client for viewing data • Server address (for GetCapabilities) • http://wgiss.ceos.org/eodp

  7. Example EODP OGC-Server Page • BNSC • ICEDS (SRTM 90m, Landsat5 mosaic(1990) + links to other servers) • Info: http://iceds.ge.ucl.ac.uk/ • Viewer: http://iceds.ge.ucl.ac.uk:8080/viewer/iceds/index.html • Servers: • http://iceds.ge.ucl.ac.uk/cgi-bin/wms?map=wms.map&SERVICE=WMS&REQUEST=GetCapabilities • http://iceds.ge.ucl.ac.uk/cgi-bin/wcs?map=wcs.map&SERVICE=WCS&REQUEST=GetCapabilities

  8. The CLASP Concept • CEOS Landsat and SRTM Project • CEOS WGISS to assist the UN and FAO in promoting the exploitation of the Landsat and SRTM data by: • Coordinating the deployment of servers hosted by various Space Agencies around the world. • Working with the OGC to accelerate the development of relevant standards and software such as OGC WCS. • Encouraging the development of standards-based software tools and associated web-based services. • Goal to go beyond just display – make data available through OGC Web Coverage Servers

  9. Related parallel activities • “Onearth” activity at JPL have made entire 2000 rgb mosaic available via OGC WMS • http://onearth.jpl.nasa.gov/ • Different band combinations also available • FAO deploying OGC compliant servers • Liping Di (GMU) planning to host Landsat and SRTM data and make it available through both OGC and GRID interfaces • Google Earth now becoming widespread – but requires very high bandwidth.

  10. Original Schedule • Planned for 2-year project • Some parts gone more quickly, some more slowly Concept Presentation Progress Presentation Final Presentation CEOS Plenary 2004 2005 WGISS/ Subgroups Project Approval Initial WMS Deployment Initial SRTM availability WCS Terrain View Integrated availability

  11. ICEDS web client

  12. Current Status • BNSC funded 2 yr ICEDS Project – ends in Jan 2006 • ICEDS achievements • Developed demonstration client • Created Guidelines Document • Begun to talk to potential users in Africa • Begun Landsat data transfer from UNEP(USGS) • Landsat 2000 dataset - 3Tbyte. • Disc transfer not successful • Data to be made available on tape by UN • SRTM already available through Internet download • Related developments: • (GMU/LAITS; Worldwind) • Google Earth

  13. Future Plans • Continue to work on data distribution • Encourage Agencies and other organisations to develop their own Portal • JAXA adding links to Digital Earth viewer • Provide demonstration to CEOS Plenary 19 ?
