The USSR in the 1930s: Social, Political, and Economic Impact of the Great Depression**

The 1930s were a transformative period for the USSR, shaped significantly by the global Great Depression. This era saw a crash in the stock market and major bank failures, leading to sweeping changes in society. Socially, the USSR experienced an increase in women’s leadership roles and the Great Purges under Stalin, which aimed at consolidating power through fear and repression. Economically, the Five-Year Plans were initiated to rapidly industrialize the nation and collectivize agriculture, confiscating grain from peasants and replacing private farms with collective ones.
