Biographical Connection • After escaping in 1838, Douglass gave lectures about his experiences. • He decided to write a biography in order to convince skeptics about his life • This book became one of the most famous slave narratives • As a boy, Douglass was a servant in Baltimore where Mrs. Auld taught him the alphabet and simple spelling • Mr. Auld commanded to his wife to stop teaching Douglass
