  4. II. Mexican Texas • Mexico offered cheap land free of taxation • Mexico’s plan was to create citizens loyal to their government to stop a U.S. takeover • Empresarios- set up settlements 1. Stephen F. Austin

  5. III. The Texas Revolution • New settlers made little effort to learn Spanish and adopt Mexican culture- Mexico closed off immigration • Trouble brews • Mexico restricts slavery, Santa Anna dictator of Mexico, Stephen Austin jailed • Texas Revolution

The Alamo and Goliad • 1836- Texas rebels- William Travis and Jim Bowie- all rebels killed when finally overrun • Goliad- Santa Anna ordered 400 surrendering rebels executed D. Victory at San Jacinto • Sam Houston surprises Santa Anna’s army and took him prisoner • Texas wins its independence

  9. Fun Facts • Texas is the only state to have the flags of 6 different nations fly over it. They are: Spain, France, Mexico, Republic of Texas, Confederate States, and the United States. • Texas boasts the nation's largest herd of whitetail deer. • More land is farmed in Texas than in any other state. •  The state's cattle population is estimated to be near 16 million.

  10. Assignment • Imagine you are defending the Alamo in 1836. Write a letter to a friend explaining your defense of the Alamo. Make sure to explain the origins of the conflict with Mexico and your support for Texas independence. Be sure to incorporate your personal feeling about the impending attack by Santa Anna’s army.
