Impact of WBTi Assessment in South Asia • Improved partnerships at regional and national level • Increased capacity of breastfeeding groups • Ensured government participation • Data and documents generated for all the countries • Increased demand of skills training, from all states of India and other countries

  5. How the Process Evolved?

  6. Afghanistan • Developed and finalized the draft code - waiting for approval • Formation of Afghanistan breastfeeding promotion partners (ABPP) • Establishment of national breastfeeding promotion board • Host of south Asia breastfeeding partners forum-3 • Kabul declaration on IYCF

  7. Bangladesh • Country-level revitalisation of the breastfeeding movement. • National conference on breastfeeding and complementary feeding organised, 500 participants. • The national infant and young child feeding strategy has been finalised. Curriculum revision in light of IYCF;

Bhutan • Actions and Plans 2007 • Assessment of BFHI has been carried out, with a view to revitalizing. • Advocate for maternity leave for 14 weeks and worksite accommodation for breastfeeding; • Survey on IYCF practices; • Advocacy for approval of BMS Code by National Assembly; • Reactivation of National Committee on promotion and protection of breastfeeding as National IYCF Committee.

  9. India • Partnership Government of India and UNICEF strengthen • National consultation on IFE and IF-HIV • A national plan of action developed • State level implementation • Serious consideration is 11th Five Year Plan for a budget head

  12. Maldives • National Consultation to finalise the ‘Regulations’ • Breastfeeding Coordinating Committee was revised. • Identified a focal point.

  13. Nepal • National capacity has been increased to impart • skills training on IYCF • The Nepal Breastfeeding Promotion Forum – the • local IBFAN group - organised the South Asia • Breastfeeding Partners’ Forum -2. • A draft strategy document for IYCF is ready.

  14. Pakistan • Regular participation in the regional events • Renewed government initiatives

  15. Sri Lanka Intensified monitoring and evaluation of the Code. The country has already started working on thegaps revealed by WBTi, focusing on: • Bottle feeding, • BFHI, • Maternity Protection and • Infant feeding and HIV.

  16. Lessons • WBTi assessment is • Doable and feasible, action oriented research • Effective means to generate new action and capacity building • Lead to development of local partnerships with governments and others • Responses are not always uniform, it takes patience and regular dialogue
