Future VisionMaturity Matrix Exercise EPA developed a comprehensive approach to developing a long-term strategy for the EA program • The EA team employed a measured approach to address objectives and long-term plans for the program • Step 1: Identified the current state of the EA program • Outline current activities • Step 2: Outlined three levels of maturity in varying degrees of difficulty to achieve • These levels generally provide for increases in sophistication, scale, and involvement Outline Potential Levels of Maturity Evaluate Current State of EA Program Document Activity Sequence in Order to Achieve Goals Determine Maturity Level Goals for Each Dimension

Future VisionMaturity Matrix Exercise EA Future Visioning Methodology, cont’d • Step 3: Assessed which level of maturity is desired for each of the following program dimensions: • Identify, Facilitate and Leverage Transformation Activities • Governance & Working Teams • Methods & Guidance • Communications & Training • Architecture Toolsets / Repository Sample: Three potential levels of maturity for the transformation dimension

Future VisionEnd Product: EA Roadmap After determining the desired level of maturity, the EA team began to develop an actionable strategy, documented in the EA Roadmap • Step 4: Determined the appropriate steps to achieve the desired level of maturity • Outlined in a logical sequence, these activities will help the EA program achieve the maturity goals • This exercise led to the development of an action-oriented EA Roadmap • This roadmap, developed in June 2007, established a 18 month timeframe to achieve the desired level of maturity Resulting level of maturity Activities

Future VisionEnd Product: EA Roadmap An example of actions taken that map to the EA Roadmap • Under the methods and guidance dimension, EPA identified seven primary steps that will support achievement of the maturity objective for this area of focus • For example, the first activity addressed the need to develop and maintain standards and guidance as well as related documents to manage program operations • In response, the EA team updated its standards and guidance documentation and re-issued the material to EA stakeholders, which increased compliance levels

Future VisionEnd Product: EA Roadmap A second example of actions taken that map to the EA Roadmap • Under the communications and training dimension, EPA identified six primary steps that will support achievement of the maturity objective for this area of focus • For example, the first activity addressed the need to develop outreach that leverages print, web and collaborative tools • In response, the EA team has developed an EA monthly update for the Enterprise Architecture Working Group, has taken steps to evaluate the EA intranet site, and is developing an Annual Report to Stakeholders

  7. Future VisionNext Steps The EA team will continue to execute against the EA Roadmap • The EA team has taken many steps towards completion in each dimension addressed on the EA Roadmap. The following outlines some of the near-term steps that are in progress, or are anticipated: • Expanding the Enterprise Architecture Working Group’s (EAWG) scope to include more official review and decision-making activities • Ex. Exploring the establishment of tiger teams for specific issues • Publishing an EA Primer and create other elements of training and outreach • Ex. While an EA Primer has been produced, it is now being refined for delivery via town hall for interested personnel • Develop EA Data Architecture • Ex. The EA team is currently developing a strong data architecture approach for release in FY08
