Mission of Big Brother Big Sisters • The Big Brothers Big Sisters Mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one to one relationships with mentors. • Also to boost the children's self esteem and help them better there future in the world. And help them make a difference. • Help better them in school and one on one contact with others.
What They do! • National research has shown that positive relationships between youth and their Big Brothers and Big Sisters mentors have a direct and measurable impact on children's lives. By participating in the youth mentoring programs, Little Brothers and Sisters are: • More confident in their schoolwork performance • Able to get along better with their families • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs • 27% less likely to begin using alcohol • 52% less likely to skip school.
History of Big Brothers Big Sisters • Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States. • President is Karen Mathis • Are big brothers and sister s for ages 6-18 • In 1904, Ernest Coulter, a court clerk in New York City, started New York Big Brothers • In 1905, Mrs. John Okeefe began a Big Sisters program in New York City • The organizations merged forming Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America in 1977
