  1. Do Now: Make a list of reasons “for” and “against” stricter gun control laws. Objectives: Students will be able to…(1) form an opinion (2) analyze a video for key information Homework: Find an article (Not on the Washington Shooting) on a news website on gun control and write a 2 paragraph summary.

  2. Background and Major Events • 2nd Amendment of the Constitution – Right to Bear Arms

  3. Gun Control Act (1968) • Done in response to JFK assassination • The legislation expanded licensing dealers, made it illegal to to mail order long guns, and it also established that convicted felons, drug users, and the mentally ill can be prohibited from possessing firearms.

  4. Brady Act (1993) • Passed by Clinton • This established a five day waiting period and mandatory background check for handgun purchases as well as setting up the National Instant Background Check System (NICS) that is used today for every purchase performed through an FFL dealer.

  5. Recent Court Cases • District of Colombia vs. Heller – Got rid of DC’s handgun ban • McDonald vs. Chicago – Struck down a handgun ban in Chicago
