Fuel taxes are vital for funding the nation’s transportation system, but tax evasion results in significant revenue losses, estimated at around $1 billion annually. To combat this, federal and state revenue and enforcement agencies have launched the Joint Federal/State Motor Fuel Tax Compliance Project, which employs audits and technological advances. Additionally, transportation investments need to align with economic prosperity, environmental justice, and the preservation of natural resources, as stated by the Alliance for a New Transportation Charter. These efforts can enhance resource efficiency and combat climate change.
