  1. Welcome to our Services Members are always Appreciated Visitors are always Honored Guests

  2. Church Discipline – Part 1 WHERE TO BEGIN IS THE QUESTION. So Let’s begin with Prayer. This will be instructional, informing, shocking and even scary as well as intimidating to new, young and even older members of the Church. Older members may experience a whole array of emotions and thoughts.

  3. Church Discipline – Part 1 We will be recording the sermons. They will be presented on Power Point that will be available on our Web Site. There will be hard copies for each family. There will CD’s available for those who want them. A copy will be signed/dated by the men and placed on file. Things will be REPEATED – on purpose.

  4. Church Discipline As We Begin This Series of Lessons We will spend some time on Several Introductory Remarks/Definitions/Issues… Some would and will disagree with what will be presented in these lessons…. For Several reasons…. However – Unless we are totally blind by ignorance or denial to the Current Status/Divisions/False Teaching going on in the Church, it is clear something is Greatly Amiss

  5. Church Discipline Why/What is it that is “Greatly Amiss”? One answer - Modern Day Worldly Philosophy has Infiltrated the Congregations of the Lord’s Church. Discipline could, would have stopped this. When Discipline is set aside Chaos Rules, in Society, Families and Individuals. There are many Reasons that this is no longer Taught or Practiced……

  6. Church Discipline These reasons will be covered through out the lessons. However these are some in brief statements 1. No one knows much, if anything about it. 2.Some say; Too harsh… Not a demonstration of love.. 3. They have already left us – really? 4. It doesn’t work……. 5. We might get sued….. And more……

  7. Church Discipline These reasons will be covered through out the lessons. It is difficult to imagine what it would be like to live in a society where citizens could flaunt the rules and absolutely no consequences would follow—no fines, no imprisonment, etc. Can you conceive of a home environment where the children are allowed to do whatever they please with utterly no discipline imposed? Total chaos would reign in either of these instances.

  8. Church Discipline Yet, there are countless congregations belonging to Jesus Christ across our land where little, if any, discipline of the wayward is ever enacted. Is it any wonder that our brotherhood is weaker today than it has been in decades?

  9. Church Discipline Exactly what is church discipline? In its broadest sense, it involves everything from the most basic instruction that the new-born child of God receives—from the time of his conversion onward, all the way to the radical “surgery” sometimes required in the withholding of fellowship from impenitent apostates. For the purpose of this study, we are speaking of everything involved in Church displine including that terminal act—the church’s obligation to withdraw its fellowship from those who cannot be reached with more moderate approaches.

  10. Church Discipline So - What is it?What is it Not? Why is it so seldom practiced? Why is there so much confusion regarding what it means and how it is to be applied? When and to Whom does it apply? What is it designed to Accomplish?

  11. What is “Church Discipline”? • Discipline, Chastisement, Correction is nothing new to God, to Man or the Bible, it has been God’s Way since the beginning of time, but more on this later. • And this we will emphasis several times as well – “God will deliver the Ultimate and Final Punishment – not Discipline – because in the end of time, the time for Discipline/Correction is over.”

  12. What is “Church Discipline”? • “Discipline” is often thought of as punitive and corrective action. • And it is that………….. but much more…. • It Is A Demonstration of Love, A Chance to “start over” - I John 1:9 and preserves the Church II Corinthians 7:12. • The responsibility of the elders, preacher, and members of the local congregation, • Discipline is the treatment due a disciple, or follower; it is education; development of faculties by instruction and exercise.

  13. What is “Church Discipline”? • Thus, discipline obviously includes: >Instruction and more, Strong's H3256 – yacar (yasar) Turn your Bibles to Leviticus 26:1- 46 ( Note 25:55 and 26:46) “And if ye will not yet 5704for all this hearken 8085 unto me, then I will punish3256you seven times 7651 more 3254 for your sins 2403 -Leviticus26:18, 21, 24. “And if ye will not be reformed3256 by me by these things, but will walk 1980 contrary 7147 unto me; Leviticus 26:23

  14. What is “Church Discipline”? • Thus, discipline obviously includes: >Instruction - Strong's H3256 – yacar (yasar) “ Then I will walk 1980 contrary 7147 unto you also in fury 2534; and I, even 637 I, will chastise3256 you seven times 7651 for your sins 2403. Leviticus 26:28 Out of heaven 8064 he made thee to hear 8085 his voice 6963, that he might instruct3256 thee: and upon earth 776 he shewed 7200 thee his great 1419 fire 784; and thou heardest 8085 his words 1697 out of the midst 8432 of the fire 784. Deuteronomy 4:36

  15. What is “Church Discipline”? • Thus, discipline obviously includes: >Instruction - Strong's H3256 – yacar (yasar) • Authorized Version (KJV) Translation Count — • Used a Total of : 43 times AV — chastise, 21 instruct 8, correct 7, taught 2, bound 1, punish 1, reformed 1, reproveth 1, sore 1

  16. What is “Church Discipline”? • Thus, discipline obviously includes: >Encouragement & Practice, 1Peter 2:1 – 2 “Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, 2. As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: Hebrews 5:14 “But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, [even] those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

  17. What is “Church Discipline”? • Thus, discipline obviously includes: >Corrective or Punitive Measures, 1Thessalonians 5:14 “Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all [men]. Titus 3:10 “A man that is an heretick after the first and secondadmonitionreject;”

  18. What is “Church Discipline”? • Thus, discipline obviously includes: >Corrective or Punitive Measures, >To deliver3860 such an one 5108 unto Satan 4567for 1519 the destruction 3639 of the flesh 4561, that 2443 the spirit 4151 may be saved4982 in 1722 the day 2250 of the Lord 2962 Jesus 2424 I Corinthians 5:5 > Of whom 3739 is 2076 Hymenaeus 5211 and 2532 Alexander 223; whom 3739 I have delivered3860 unto Satan 4567, that 2443 they may learn3811not 3361 to blaspheme 987. I TIMOTHY 1:20

  19. What is “Church Discipline”? • Thus, discipline obviously includes • Paideuō - Pronunciation - pī-dyü'-ō (Key) • one who constructively corrects(disciplines) in order to train • instruct, train, educate, as an on-going matter, in accord with rules and proper conduct; discipline, punish, for the purpose of better behavior • to educate, instruct, children, Acts 7:22; 22:3; genr. paideuvomai, to be taught, learn, 1 Tim. 1:20; to admonish, instruct by admonition, 2 Tim. 2:25; Tit. 2:12; in NT to chastise, chasten, 1 Cor. 11:32; 2 Cor. 6:9; Heb. 12:6, 7, 10; Rev. 3:19; of criminals, to scourge, Lk. 23:16, 22*

  20. What is “Church Discipline”? • Authorized Version (KJV) Translation Count — Total times used: 13 • AV — chasten 6, chastise 2, learn 2, teach 2, instruct 1 • 1) to train children • a) to be instructed or taught or learn • b) to cause one to learn • 2) to chastise • a) to chastise or castigate with words, to correct

  21. What is “Church Discipline”? • Thus, discipline obviously includes: • 1) of those who are moulding the character of others by reproof and admonition • b) of God • 1) to chasten by the affliction of evils and calamities • c) to chastise with blows, to scourge • 1) of a father punishing his son • 2) of a judge ordering one to be scourged

  22. Why is it so seldom practiced? • Ask the question another way: Why are so few successful at raising good and godly children? • They don’t know how and/or it’s hard work! • Consider Matt.28:19-20…. >It’s much easier to “teach” >than to “teach to observe”! One requires minimal effort and the other requires constant supervision and effort!

  23. Why is there so much confusion on the subject? • Some fail to see the “total package” of discipline and think of only corrective measures. This works no better with brethren than it does with children! Instruction and encouragement must precede any punitive measures. You don’t punish a child until you’ve taught them better and made efforts to encourage right conduct. • Some simply don’t love enough to put forth the effort…. they settle for and console themselves with teaching, instead of teaching to observe! • It’s hard work- we get lazy & shift responsibility.

  24. OK, so how is Church Discipline supposed to be applied? • First, teach and educate- 1Tim.1:5; 3:15; 2Tim.4:2 • Second, encourage and train, Heb.10:24-25 • Then if rebellion still exists, corrective measures must be taken. How? What does this mean? • Think for a moment: why are there different answers given in the N.T. to “What must I do to be saved?” • Because it depends on where you are now! • Ditto with corrective discipline...

  25. Applying Corrective Church Discipline • The discipline prescribed in the N.T. depends on the nature of the offense. Consider: >Personal Injury or Affront, Matt.18:15ff -go to him personally, v.15 -then take 2 or 3 witnesses, v.16 -tell it to the church, v.17 >False & Divisive Teaching, Titus 3:8-11 -reject after a first and second warning >Public Unrepentant Sin, 1Cor.5:1-8 -do not associate and remove, vv.9-13 -cf.2Thess.3:6-14 for similar action regarding one leading an unruly life

  26. Most anything can and will be done wrong if done for the wrong reason. • So, what are the right motivations for corrective Church discipline? 1. Win back your brother! 1Cor.5:5; Jas.5:19ff 2. Purge sinful behavior, 1Cor.5:6-8,13; Eph.5:27 3. Encourage godly fear, Acts 5:5,11; Titus 3:8,14

  27. And what are the wrong motivations for corrective Church discipline? • Vengeance, Rom.12:16-19 • Personal matters of judgment rather issues of faith, Rom.14; 15:1-2 • “Getting rid of a problem child” rather than helping to solve his problems.

  28. Church Discipline: • Is really not difficult to understand if: we take the whole picture of it: instruction, encouragement, and corrective measures. • However, it is not easy to administer…. -it takes diligent and consistent work; -and it takes the right heart of love of truth and souls! • But its rewards are tremendous! James 5:20

  29. Church Discipline: • But its rewards are tremendous! James 5:20 • “Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.” • And that is the Goal of Church Discipline • Saving Souls!
