  2. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” Ezekiel 33:6

  3. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • SIN IS SERIOUS! - But not taken seriously. • SIN is a transgression of God’s laws. I John 3:4 “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.” • DEATH is the Result of Sin - Romans 6:23 • All have are guilty of Sin - Romans 3:23 • Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: Romans 5:12

  4. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • Because of SIN - Christ, God’s Son, died on the Cross, a very cruel and inhumane death. • Romans 5:6 “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.” • Romans 5:7 “For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.” • Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

  5. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! “He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.” I John 3:8

  6. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • Think of that ---- • SIN is SO SERIOUS that God would send His Son to Save us from the result of Sin. John 3:16“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” • Perish - per·ish[per-ish] World English Dictionary • verb(used without object) 1.to die or be destroyedthrough violence, privation, etc.: to perish in an earthquake. • 2. topass away or disappear: an age of elegance that has forever perished. • 3. to sufferdestruction or ruin:Hisvaluable paintings perished in the fire. • 4. to suffer spiritual death: Save us,lestweperish.

  7. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • Because it is SO SERIOUS – God has set in place WATCHMEN • God impressed such news upon Ezekiel in Ezekiel 3 & 33:2-9

  8. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • There are Watchman within the Church (which Israel represents to us). Elders, Preachers and Members • It is an extended duty as watchman regarding the world overall. • But of course that is - if we ourselves are following God as we should be doing.

  9. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • God has called Ezekiel to “warn” the people of Israel regarding their SINS. • Ezekiel 1:1 Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth [month], in the fifth [day] of the month, as I [was] among the captives by the river of Chebar, [that] the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God. • Ezekiel 1:2 In the fifth [day] of the month, which [was] the fifth year of king Jehoiachin's captivity, (70 yrs. Babylonian) • Ezekiel 1:3 The word of the LORD came expressly unto Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and the hand of the LORD was there upon him.

  10. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • Let’s Read Ezekiel 2:1-10 together and see the charge of God to Ezekiel. • He is sent to a rebellious nation of people – Israel • Chapter 3:17-21 – He is told that he has been set as a “watchman” for the first time and then again in our text of 33:2-9

  11. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • Eze 33:2 “Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them, When I bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man of their coasts, and set him for their watchman: Eze 33:3   If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people; Eze 33:4   Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. Eze 33:5   He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul. Eze 33:6   But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take [any] person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand. Eze 33:7 ¶ So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me. Eze 33:8   When I say unto the wicked, O wicked [man], thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked [man] shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Eze 33:9   Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.

  12. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • First a general principle is stated. • The setting of watchmen to watch for the enemy was a common occurrence. Every border would have its watchtowers, every city its watchmen. And, as soon as an enemy was seen to be approaching, the long curved horns the watchmen carried would be sounded as a warning to the people, and would go on being sounded until they were sure that the people had heard. • This gave those in the fields the opportunity to flee within the walled cities for refuge, and enabled the defending troops to ready themselves.

  13. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • The responsibility was a great one, and they would use men with sharp eyes. • The safety of the people would depend on their early warning. • But once they had given their warning their task was done.It was then up to others to take notice of the warning and implement what was necessary for deliverance, and for those in the fields to seek refuge. However – the warning must be given.

  14. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • Any failure then would not be the responsibility of the watchman, but of those who heard the warning. • But if the watchman saw the enemy coming and did not give warning, then their blood would rest on him. He would have failed in his duty and would be to blame for all that followed. • It was an awesome responsibility. They would be blood guilty in the eyes of the relatives of the dead, and in the eyes of God.

  15. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • ‘When I bring a sword on the land.’ In a sense every invader is under the hand of Yahweh. Nothing happens without His say so. But this also implies guilt on the part of the invaded nation. For some reason they are receiving punishment. • ‘He is taken away in his iniquity.’ The punishment is being exacted on this person. But if it is the watchman’s fault, the watchman must also bear the blame. This is a hint of the application to follow.

  16. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • Note that in the illustration - God has spoken of a land against which He has ‘brought the sword’, therefore it is a blameworthy land and its people sinful. • But they might have been spared if the watchman had done his duty. • Thus we are prepared for the fact that a watchman of Yahweh is to be looked for, to turn men to repentance so that they may escape punishment.

  17. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • Ezekiel is reminded that he is God’s chosen watchman, appointed to watch on behalf of Israel on whom the sword has been brought. • Now he must speak and give warning, for unless they repent, the sword will also come on Israel in exile. Indeed to the exiles God is saying, ‘O wicked man, you will surely die.’ It is now up to Ezekiel to warn them and call them to repentance, to a change of heart and mind, with the aim of turning them from their present way. • And if he does not do so their blood will be on his hands and God will require it of him. • Note that the call is to each individual. There is individual responsibility, and Ezekiel is responsible for each individual.

  18. The same is true for all Christians. • We are “watchmen” in the Church. • We have been made watchmen for the world. • We know His truth and the judgments that will come on men. • We too are therefore responsible to warn men and to seek to turn them from their evil ways, and if we do not we too will be held responsible for their final death and what they have to face.

  19. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • Why? • Ezekiel 33.11 “Say to them, As I live, says the Lord Yahweh, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn yourselves, turn yourselves, from your evil ways. For why will you die, O house of Israel.”

  20. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • These words should be written in large letters. • God has ‘no pleasure in the death of the wicked’. His longing is that they turn from their wickedness and live. • That is why He made the provision for forgiveness under the old covenant at Sinai, and that is why He sent His Son into the world that we might live through Him. • There will be no pleasure for God in the judgment day. Only deep regret and sorrow as He passes His sentence on the majority of mankind. But nevertheless that sentence will be passed on all those who have not turned from their sins, for God is not only love, He is also light. He cannot overlook or deal lightly with unforgiven sin, for it reveals a heart set on evil.

  21. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • But here He emphatically calls men to turn from their sins. He longs for their repentance. Then they will not need to face sin’s punishment. Then they will not die the death of the wicked. His cry to His people is heart-rending. ‘ • Peter writes “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9 • Why would we choose to die or let anyone else die?

  22. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • SIN is the enemy • Sin is of the Devil and so the Devil is the enemy. • He wants to destroy the Church and he wants to take the world as a whole to Hell with him. • God has said – “Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.” James 5:20

  23. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • Paul has said to Timothy and subsequently to us: • “I charge [thee] therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.” 2 Timothy 4:1-2

  24. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • And he has said earlier to Timothy – • “Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.” I Timothy 4:16 • Does this sound familiar? • Is it anything like what God has said to Ezekiel? • We too are “watchman” today – both in the Church and in the World. An awesome responsibility.

  25. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • We know the enemy, we see it coming – what are we to do as the “watchman” of God? • We are to herald the “warning” if we don’t they will be lost, but so we will we. • When we chose to become a Christian we chose to commit to this responsibility of being a “watchman” – Note the charge of the Great Commission – “…teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you…” Matthew 28:20

  26. WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! • What has He commanded us to do? • Mark 16:15 and 16 “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” • Again - “Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.” James 5:20

  27. Conclusion WE ARE “WATCHMEN”! SIN IS SERIOUS!!!! 1. How are we doing with our duty? 2. Solomon states that the conclusion to life is this – “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this [is] the whole [duty] of man.”Ecclesiastes 12:13 3. Will the sinner be warned? 4. Will we be saved ourselves? 5. How are we doing with our responsibility?
