  1. Welcome to our Services Where our Members are Appreciated And Our Visitors Are Our Honored Guests

  2. Church Discipline Part 2 To Our Visitors some comments – Two Weeks ago we began a series of studies on CD We spent a lot of time on defining “Discipline” We spent time last Sunday evening on the fact that “We Are Watchmen” and what that meant in regard to CD and our Duty to Warn the Sinful to Repent.

  3. Church Discipline Part 2 We want to restate Two very important points from our past studies regarding Church Discipline Discipline/Chastisement is an act of Love Hebrews 12:6 B. There will come a time when Discipline/Chastisement will no longer take place, but Punishment will begin for the impenitent individual. Revelation 20:11-15

  4. Church Discipline Part 2 Today our study will begin to center on “What” and “Why” and “Who”.

  5. Disciplining The Disorderly “But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us” (2 Thessalonians 3:6) NOTE THAT IT IS A “COMMAND” and not an “OPTION”.

  6. FACTS • brethren can fall from grace and begin living worldly lives • brethren are to look out for those who may be slipping • we are commanded to walk according to apostolic tradition • we must withdraw from the disorderly

  7. Admitted by Christ Hear (Rom. 10:17) Believe (Jn. 3:16) Repent (Lk. 13:3) Confess (Acts 8:37) Be baptized (Acts 2:38) *Church Admittance Excluded from Christ Sin without repentance (2 Thess. 3:6; Matt. 18:17; etc.) *Church Withdraw LAWInclusion & ExclusionRegarding the Church

  8. 2 Essential Kinds of Teaching • “a rod” – chastisement; rebuke, reproof, convincing, or correctional • “in love” – gentleness, exhortation “What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?” (1 Cor. 4:21)

  9. CHOICE So we see that Discipline is a CHOICE

  10. DISCIPLINE INSTRUCTION & CORRECTION PUNISHMENT REFORM THOUGHT TRAIN COERCIVE “Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all.” -1 THESSALONIANS 5:14 ‘to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’ (ACTS 26:18; 2 TIM. 4:2-5) TITUS 3:10, 11 1 TIMOTHY 1:19, 20 2 CORINTHIANS 2:6

  11. TITUS 3:10, 11 10 Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition, 11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned. • THERE IS A TIME TO ‘REJECT’ ONE • WHEN THEY ARE ‘DIVISIVE’ THEY MUST BE • ADMONISHED (INSTRUCTED) • REJECTED (PUNISHED) IF THEY SEEK NOT REPENTANCE

  12. TITUS 3:10, 11 10 Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition, 11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned. • WHY REJECT ONE? • HE IS WARPED “TURNED INSIDE OUT” • SINNING: MISSING THE MARK, WANDERING AWAY FROM GOD’S LAW • SELF-CONDEMNED “CONDEMNED OF HIMSELF” (KJV)

  13. TITUS 3:10, 11 10 Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition, 11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned. • IF A BROTHER REJECTS ‘THE FAITH,’ THEN HE MUST IN TURN BE REJECTED • NOTE: PATTERN HERE DIFFERENT THAN MATTHEW 18:15-17

  14. 3 warnings DIFFERENT PATTERN FOR DIFFERENT SITUATIONS • PERSONAL PRIVATE SINS REQUIRE THREE WARNINGS 15 "Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. 16 "But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ 17 "And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.

  15. DIVISIVE BRETHREN GET TWO WARNINGS 10 As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, 11 knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. (TITUS 3:10, 11; RSV)

  16. 2 Corinthians 2:6 “This punishment which was inflicted by the majority is sufficient for such a man” • punishment was given • inflicted by the majority • was sufficient WHAT WAS THE PUNISHMENT?

  17. 1 CORINTHIANS 5:1, 2 1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles—that a man has his father’s wife! 2 And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you. THE INDIVIDUAL’S SIN THE CHURCH’S SIN THE CHURCH’S TASK

  18. CORINTH’S TASK ELABORATED1 CORINTHIANS 5:3-7 3 For I indeed, as absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged (as though I were present) him who has so done this deed. 4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5 deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 6 Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? 7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump,

  19. 21. 7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, THE DANGER

  22. Discipline • keeps the church pure • “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light” (Eph. 5:8) • is done because of concern for the soul perishing in sin • “. . . for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus” (1 Cor. 5:5) • is done to obey the Lord

  23. Our Specific Responsibilities Toward the Disorderly

  24. “Mourn” 1 CORINTHIANS 5:2“And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you.”

  25. Socially Ostracize 1 CORINTHIANS 5:9 I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people.10 Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world.11 But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat with such a person.

  26. Do Not Regard Such As An Enemy 2 THESSALONIANS 3 14 And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed. 15 Yet do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

  27. Continue To Admonish Remember – this cannot be said enough – 2 THESSALONIANS 3:15:“Yet do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.”

  28. Remember • NO ONE IS IMMUNE TO SIN • The Apostle Paul stated regarding himself - “But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified” (1 Corinthians 9:27) • He said to the Church at Galatia - “You have become estranged from Christ. . .you have fallen from grace” (Galatians 5:4) • The Hebrew Children were warned - “Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God” (Hebrews 3:12)

  29. sin ‘caught’ (marg.) WHO? repair, strengthen mild, meek self-examination Reclaiming & Restoring • Galatians 6:1“Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.”

  30. The Spiritual (Gal. 6:1) • are concerned about those overtaken in sin • walk according to the Spirit (Gal. 5:25) • described as people of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kind, good, faithful, gentle and self-controlled • they are not conceited, provoking others to sin, and envious

  31.
