  2. Student Help & Support: Community, Synergy • Toolkit working group formed from whole HE community: teaching, support staff, students, representing the entire CoSC HE offer. Explorations grounded in ‘learner journey.’ • Group considered the learning experiences of non-traditional students, identifying key commonalities. • Learning Centre team acted as ‘toolkit ambassadors,’ promoting to students through inductions, research skills classes, referencing classes, one-to-one mentoring. • Most valuable tactic? Giving each HE student own copy of the Harvard guide. Culture change enormous, immediate. Choice to adopt College style made by students, not staff!

  3. HE Toolkit: Student Help & Support The concept: synthesising good practice in research, reading, writing, study, IT, and more into two sides of A4. The approach: succinct, plain English, aka the ‘Ronseal’ approach: ‘it does what it says on the tin.’ Translating the abstract and general into the concrete and specific. The resource: streamlined online package of printable PDF helpsheets for: study readiness; study, reading and writing skills; research; IT; assessment; using e-resources. Hard-copy sheets placed on stands in library & campus. The audience: grounded in feedback from students on Access, HNC/HND, PGCE/Cert.Ed, Foundation Degree programmes.

  4. Delivery & Impacts: Student Help & Support Delivery programme: Librarian ‘ambassador’: CPD for teaching staff; adoption by Access, HNC/HND, Foundation Degree, PGCE/Cert.Ed programmes; new bespoke subject-based library student induction; partnership with lecturer for classroom delivery of assignment-focused research skills (quality, discernment, journal search, e-books, e-resources) and Harvard referencing; one-to-one student research & referencing mentoring; librarian critical friend. Impacts of toolkit and delivery programme: improved student bibliographies; referencing of quality sources; wider reading; focus on journal search in class/mentoring led to deeper understanding/evaluation evidenced by higher grades; increased use of print & e-resources.
