  6. Components of a Network(Hardware) • Network attached Devices • Computer & Peripheral • Computer : • Server / Client / Workstation / Terminals • Peripheral : • Printers • Scanners • CD-Rom Drive , Tape Drive (Secondary Storage Devices)

  7. Transmission Media • Wired • Coaxial Cable • UTP / STP • Optical Fibres • Wireless • IR • Radio Frequency

  8. Connecting Devices • Repeaters • Hubs • Bridges • Switches • Routers

  9. Network Attached Devices • Most common : • Client, Servers, Printers • Client • any computer that accesses resources • Servers • any computer that hosts resources • Printers • output devices

  10. Primary & Secondary Resources • Those devices that can be directly accessed via the network • PRIMARY RESOURCES • Those devices connected to a primary device are called • SECONDARY RESOURCES • e.g. CD-ROM Drive • Slaving

Print Server • receives file from workstations • then forwards these files to specific network printer • shared printer • network printer • manage a print queue • print queue = specific holding area where files are stored there until they are printed • stored file = spooler file • spooling • FIFO • first-in-first-out

Application Server • runs an application software package • forward the results of its processing to workstations that making the request • use the processing power of both the server and workstations • old days • host computer + attached terminals • host computers (mainframes) do all the processing • terminals do no processing
