Operational ASWProgram Overview CDR Van Gurley Commanding OfficerNaval Oceanography ASW Center Stennis
Who are we - What do we do? • Basic Mission • Provide an asymmetric warfighting advantage for ASW Forces through the application of oceanographic sciences • Nomenclature • NOAT • Naval Oceanography ASW Team • Deployed support to major ASW Commanders • NOAD • Naval Oceanography ASW Detachment • Direct shore support to either P3 Tactical Support Center or major ASW Staff • RBC • Reachback Cell • Centralized production hub – “ASW 911” - for the Fleet
What makes this hard? • ASW is a enabling warfare area • Output is not measured in tonnage • A kill may not be good…and contact may not mean contact • Primary environmental impacts are derivatives of derived quantities • No agreed manner to measure basic model skill • Very spare objective observation set • Most feedback is anecdotal • Currently moving in multiple directions at the same time • Transform what we do • Change where we do it • Improve the quality of the output • Do it for less

THE REAL-TIME ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENTS AND TACTICAL RECOMMENDATIONS WOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFICULT AT BEST WITHOUT THEM ONBOARD... NOAT IS A SIGNIFICANT STEP FORWARD IN DEVELOPING THE CARRIER STRIKE GROUP’S ASW WARFIGHTING READINESS AND SHOULD BE MADE AN INTEGRAL PART OF EVERY CARRIER STRIKE GROUP.
