  2. Objectives • Students will be able to use a scalpel correctly. • Students will understand the principals of surgery.

  3. Skin and membrane provide barriers to invading pathogens. Surgery disrupts this barrier.

  4. Aseptic Techniques • General practice used to minimize the risk of infection that may occur following surgery. • Germicides that are to harsh for skin. • The lessons the exposure through equipment and facilities. Disinfectants

  5. Sterilization • Procedure such as application of pressurized steam and chemicals in which all microorganisms are killed. • Pressurized steam and chemicals are two means. • Every surgical instrument is a potential source for contamination.

  6. Autoclave • The device used to sterilize the instruments. • Instruments are wrapped in special packs. • Water is boiled at 250 degrees for 15-30 minutes. • Autoclave has a tight seal allowing for pressure buildup.

  7. Instruments • Made of stainless steel. • Good durability, treated to not corrode
