  2. Epidemic • During the winter of 1918, just as World War 1 came to an end, an influenza spread across the globe. • More then 20 million people died from the flu between 1918-1919. • An epidemic is an unusually high occurrence of a disease in a certain place during a specific time period.

  3. Emerging Diseases • An emerging disease is a disease that has become increasingly common in humans within the last 20 years or threatens to become more common in the near future. • Ex: Avian Flu(Asia), SARS(Asia), Yellow Fever(Africa, South America, Caribbean Islands), Dengue Fever(Tropical and Subtropical regions), and West Nile(U.S, Africa, Australia, Europe, Middle East, West Asia.)

  4. Why do they emerge? • Humans come into contact with infected animals • Pathogens become resistant to existing drugs • Lack of appropriate immunization • International travel • Global food supply
