  1. Salts L.O.: Describe the reactions of an acid with carbonates, bases and alkalis to form a salt.

  2. Pre-work: water of crystallisation.

  3. Q10 (moles and reactions) on Friday 7th October Q10 acid/base reactions on Monday 11th October EOMT 1.1 21st October

  4. OCR activity 3

  5. Learn your topic (10 min) • Teach your topic to the rest of the group (10 min) • Present to the class Student 1: Salts from carbonates Student 2: Salts from bases Student 3: Salts from alkalis Student 4: ammonium salts as fertilisers and calculating percentage of nitrogen in fertiliser.

  6. Making salts • Sulphuric acid makes sulphate salts • Hydrochloric acid makes chloride salts • Nitric acid makes nitrate salts

  7. Quick questions 2 • What is the definition of a weak acid? • Write out an equation with state symbols for the formation of magnesium chloride from magnesium oxide and hydrochloric acid • What does ‘diprotic’ mean?

  8. (f) explain that a salt is produced when the H+ ion of an acid is replaced by a metal ion or NH4. (g) describe the reactions of an acid with carbonates, bases and alkalis, to form a salt
