Salts are compounds created by the reaction of acids and bases, where negative ions from the acid combine with positive ions from the base. This neutralization process occurs in a water solution, producing water and salts according to the general formula: acid + base → salt + water. Titration is a method used to determine the concentration of an unknown solution by using a standard solution until the reaction is complete and color change occurs. Additionally, acids are classified as binary or trinary, with specific naming conventions based on their composition.

  1. Salts

  2. What is a salt? • A salt is a compound formed when the negative ions from an acid combine with the positive ions of a base • Neutrilization is a chemical reaction between an acid and a base that takes place in a water solution, the products of which are water and salts

  3. Acid/Base Reactions • The general formula for an acid/base reaction is acid + base -> salt + water

  4. Titration • The process in which a solution of known concentration is used to determain the concentration of another • The standard acid or base solution is added to the unknown acid or base solution containing an indicator • Slowly add known solution until the entire solution changes color • At this point all of one substance has been neutralized • Using the known volume of standard solution used the concentration of the unknown can be calculated

  5. Naming Acids and Bases • What is the name of HCl? • There are two types of acid: • Binary Acid – 2 elements, one of which must be H • Trinary Acid – 3 elements, one of which must be H and another O

  6. Naming a binary acid • Hydro – stem of element – ic acid • HCl hydrochloric acid • Naming a trinary acid • Stem of element – ic if polyatomic ends in ate, ous if the polyatomic ends in ite - acid • HNO3 nitric acid
