  1. AMHS WorkshopChennai, IndiaDecember 15-16, 2008 IPv4, IPv6 Integration Tom McParland BCI

  2. IP Integration Issues • Asia-Pacific Network of Backbone and Non-Backbone Systems • Types of Connections to Non-Backbone Systems • Connection to Non-Backbone AFTN Systems • Connection to Non-Backbone OSI AMHS Systems • Connection to Non-Backbone IPS AMHS Systems • Assumed IP Version • Issues with IPv6 Integration

  3. Asia-Pacific Backbone and Non-Backbone Systems

  4. Types of Connections to Non-Backbone Systems • Backbone Systems are to support OSI connections with one another • Backbone Systems may support the following connections to Non-Backbone Sytems: • AFTN Connection • OSI AMHS Connection • IP AMHS Connection

  5. Connection to Non-Backbone AFTN Systems

  6. Connection to Non-Backbone AFTN Systems

  7. Connection to Non-Backbone OSI AMHS Systems

  8. Connection to Non-Backbone OSI AMHS Systems

  9. Connection to Non-Backbone IP AMHS Systems

  10. Connection to Non-Backbone IP AMHS Systems

  11. Assumed IP Version • The assumed IP version to be implemented in Asia/Pac by 2011 is IPv4. • The “dual-stack” Backbone MTAs support: • TP4 over CLNP or • TP0-RFC1006-TCP over IPv4 • The ATN Routers support the IPv4 SNDCF and the IPv6 SNDCF which provides encapsulation of CLNP within IPv4 or IPv6

  12. Issues with IPv6 Integration • ICAO’s goal is that the next generation IPS ATN will be based on IPv6. • Will require development of Addressing Plan, AS Numbering Plan, and Routing Policy • The issues for Asia/Pac are concerned with how and when to implement IPv6. • As IPv6 SNDCF in Routers • Already available from some vendors • There is no change required for the AMHS System • Logical first step in transition to IPv4 Internetwork

  13. Issues with IPv6 Integration(continued) • As “dual-stack” in Routers and AMHS system • Not yet available by ATN Router vendors • Upgrade will likely be more costly than COTs Router • Requires change to AMHS system • Advantage would be to operate with current X.25 front-end switch • ATN Router is still available to support air-ground applications

  14. Issues with IPv6 Integration(continued) • As separate Router with dual-stack” AMHS system • Available as COTS product • Less costly than ATN Router upgrade • Requires change to AMHS system • Will not operate with current X.25 front-end switch • ATN Router may still be needed to support air-ground applications

  15. Support for Air-Ground Applications in Asia-Pac
