AUSTRALIA “The Down Under” • The only place in the world that is a continent, a country, and an Island all in one. • It is home to many unusual animals. • It is the largest Island in the world.

The Tasmanian Devil • Lives in the woods • Eats meat • black and has a white bandage under its chest

It has pink pointy ears that turn red when its angry due to increased blood flow.

The Australian Furseal • Lives in South Australia. • Eats squids and octopuses • It’s yellow, gray, and black. It has a waterproof body.

It dives 150 meters deep . • It is a good swimmer.

The Duck Billed Platypus • Live in Eastern Australia in rivers or lakes. • Eats insects, shrimp and worms. • The feet are webbed. • Body and tail are covered with a thick soft woolly fur.

It detects its prey with its nose. • The spur can be used in defense against predators (the venom can cause excruciating pain)

The Red Kangaroo • Lives in the Desert • Eats grass • Its red and has big hind feet

It is a Marsupial. • It has special feet. • It carries its babies in its pouch.

The Crocodile • Lives in the Northern coast and swamps • Eats fish, meat, dingoes, turtles and wallabies • Worlds largest reptile, broad stubby snout, cone shaped teeth.

Its mouth opens which enables the croc to cool down, as a lot of their time is spent thermoregulating

The Koala Bear • Lives in trees, mountain • Eats eucalypt leaves • Ash colored bear with white tuffs of hair on its ears

They sleep about 20 hours a day. • The rest of their day is spent eating.

The Numbat • It lives in the woods. • Eats white ants and termites. • It is reddish brown and has black stripes, a pointed snout, short ears, and a bushy tail.

They do not have a pouch for nurturing their young so the young must simply cling to the belly fur of their mother.

The Goanna • Lives in Northern Australia • Eats insects and eggs • Snake like tongue • It is a reptile

It usually lays eleven eggs • It is an active forager which tracks down and digs out lizards and their eggs, insects, spiders, scorpions, centipedes and even small mammals.

The Wombat • Lives in burrows • Eats grass, plants, herbs, and roots • Brown fur, sharp claws, and sharp teeth

It can only be found in one place in the world. • It is found in Epping Forest National Park in central Queensland.

The Frilled Lizard • Lives in Queensland • Eats flies and other insects • Matches the land on which it lives

Its frill is a part of its protection • It is a part of the dragon family

The Australian Owl • Lives in Australian Outback • Eats Mice, cockroaches, frogs, spiders, and centipedes • Heart shaped bill, large yellow eyes, and a long tongue that is forked

The eggs incubate for one month • hunts at night • sometimes called [Mouth Owl] • blend in with the ground • weighs 15 centimeters

The Emu • Lives in the desert • Eats grass, flowers, seeds, and drooping feathers • It’s a bird but it can’t fly

The Emu • Lays dark-green eggs • Has unusual voice • Male sits on eggs

The Cockatoo • Lives in trees. • Eats seeds. • Black with white tail long beak.

Other name short billed white tail cockatoo. • Lives for 60 years.

The Pygmy Possum • Lives in trees • Eats nectar, pollen, insects, and soft fruit • It has a curly tail • Its body is covered with fur and it has whiskers.

It goes into a state of Torpor (hibernation) to conserve energy. • Its nose is tucked into its chest.

The Sugar Glider • Lives in trees • Eats sap, gum from acacias and eucalyptus as well as eating a range of arboreal insects. • Very thin skin on ankle and arms they are silvery blue.

They can glide distances of 50 to 100 meters.

The Laughing Kookaburra • Lives in trees. • Eats small animals insects ,snakes, and lizards. • It has a really big head and a really huge beak.

It has a very strange voice that almost sounds like a person laughing.

The Dingo • Lives in a family group • Eats Kangaroo, rats, mice, frogs, and even fruit • Its reddish brown

It does not like water • It does not bark
