Teacher Instructions • The game should be played like jeopardy, but students do not need to answer in question format. • In order for the numbers on the button page to change colors so you know which questions have already been answered, you must directly click on the number, not on the surrounding button. If you click on the button without clicking on the number, the number will not change color. • Click on the question slides to make the answer appear. • If you cannot read the answer through the picture on the screen, try clicking a second time. The picture should disappear, leaving only the text. 5. The back arrows on each page will take you back to the button page, where students can pick what category and level of question they would like to answer. 6. Some of the pictures are taken from Kilowatt Ours; others are not. However, all of the questions and answers are taken directly from the film and Activity 9 in the Companion Curriculum. 7. Why is air pollution an important issue in the Southeast?How many people die from air pollution every year? • We are seeing the effects of air pollution on human health. Air pollution contributes to 11,000 deaths per year in the Southeast.

What type of waste does nuclear power generation produce? Nuclear power generation produces radioactive waste, including uranium mill tailings, reactor fuels and weapons-grade plutonium waste, and plutonium waste. The waste is extremely toxic and we still do not know what to do with it!
Why is flooding a resulting problem of coal mining? • Flooding is a problem because hundreds of millions of tons of debris are dumped into the valleys below the coal mines, filling streams with silt.
What has happened in Great Smoky Mountains National Park as a result of burning coal in power plants? • Visibility in the Great Smoky Mountains has declined 60% over the last 60 years. Air pollution is the biggest problem that the national park is dealing with. The pollution affects trees, alters soils, and harms fish in the streams. One of the by-products of coal-fired power plants is ground-level ozone pollution, which damages living tissue • in plants.
How many people in the United States live in bad air areas? • According to the EPA, 33 million people live in bad air areas around the United States.
Why do 45 out of 50 states warn that fish are unsafe to eat? • These states post advisories orwarnings because of the high levels of methylmercury in the water, which ends up in the fish and then in humans who eat the fish. Methylmercury is toxic to humans, especially children and unborn fetuses.

What is Energy Star? • Energy Star is a federal government program run by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy that certifies and identifies energy-efficient products. Some examples of products that can have the Energy Star label are lights, windows, refrigerators, clothes washers and dryers, dishwashers, ceiling fans, and televisions.

What can be done to traffic signals and exit signs to save energy and money? • Traffic signals and exit signs can be upgraded to LED bulbs, which are very energy efficient. They use 90% less energy than incandescent bulbs.
Name some actions that can be taken at school to save energy and money. • At school, we can turn off the lights and computers when they are not in use, we can adjust the temperature of the room, we can use daylighting, we can conduct a school energy audit and present recommendations for change to the administration and school board, we can show “Kilowatt Ours” to the entire school, or we can start an energy efficiency campaign on campus. How does TVA’s Green Power Switch program work? • Any resident in the TVA region can call their local utility to find out if they can participate in the Green Power Switch program. The customer voluntarily purchases blocks of green power (150 kWh) for $4 each, which displace that amount of energy from the power mix produced by TVA at coal, hydro, and nuclear power plants.
What are some benefits of daylighting? • Some benefits are: saving energy and money, • and improved student performance, test scores and behavior.
What does “net-zero” mean? • “Net-zero” means that a home produces as much energy as it consumes because of energy efficiency and the use of green power.
How is methane gas produced? • Methane gas is produced naturally from the decay of organic matter. It can be harnessed from waste-water treatment plants, landfills, and dairy farms, and used to produce energy.
