  2. Taft – Republican President 1908-1912 • Busted up 90 trust • Signed Payne-Aldrich Tariff reduce tariffs on manufactured goods… • Disputed public lands- letting commercial interest exploit the natural resources • Republican party splits • TR forms a Progressive party called Bull Moose Party

  3. 1913 • NAWSA, National American Woman suffrage Association protest on Wilson’s inauguration day • Federal Reserve Act divides nation in 12 regions , each headed by federal reserve bank • Changed the banking industry • Underwood Tariff @ 1913 reduced rates since Civil War • 16th Amendment ratified a graduated income tax on individual’s income

Financial & Banking Reforms • Federal Trade Act sets up the Federal Trade Commission to investigate unfair business practices in big business • Clayton Antitrust act strengthens more regulation by federal government over big business tycoons • Federal Reserve System – divided nation into 12 districts; each district had a federal reserve bank –issue new paper currency in emergency, loans, transfer funds • By 1923 70% of the nation’s banking system was part of this system

  5. 1916-1919 • Election year women suffragist protested @ democratic convention • Carrie Chapman Catt President of NAWSA & focused on: organization, ties btwn. local, state, & national workers, establishing a wide base of support, cautious tactics, ladylike behavior • Some protesters were arrested jailed & even forced fed when attempting a hunger strike • @1919 the 19th amendment gave suffrage to women 72 yrs after had the first convention demanding the vote at Seneca Falls convention @1848 • 18th amendment PROHIBITION of Alcohol

China & Open Door Policy • Due to war & foreign intervention China had become the “sick man” of Asia • John Hay’s Open Door Notes=U.S. called for open access to Chinese ports & the elimination of special privileges for any other trading nations a • Other nations accepted these proposals which remained in effects until post WWII

  8. Boxer Rebellion • 1900 Chinese rebelled against foreigners • 100’s of missionaries and other foreigners to drive out the “Foreign Devils • Within two months international forces put down this rebellion
