Earth’s Atmosphere • Atmosphere – thin layer of air that forms a protective covering around the planet • Maintains a balancebetween heat absorbed from the sun, and heat that escapes back to space • Mixture of gases, solids, and liquids. • Example of solids; dust, salt (ocean-spray), ash (volcanoes), pollen (plants) 1% 21% 78% (carbon dioxide, helium, hydrogen)
