  2. War Hero • George Herbert Walker Bush was born on June 12, 1924, in Milton, Massachusetts • Father was a Banker and Senator • After High School joined the Navy was the youngest commissioned pilot (19) • Flew 58 missions

  3. War Hero • Received the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery after his torpedo plane was shot down by the Japanese in the vicinity of the Bonin Islands in the Pacific on September 2, 1944. • During that incident, Bush’s plane was hit and set on fire but he continued toward his target, a radio station, and successfully bombed it before parachuting out of his plane. He later was rescued from the water by an American submarine.

  4. Post War • After WWII studied at Yale • Captain of Baseball Team • Graduated in 1948 Moved Family (6 kids) to Texas • Got into Oil Industry

  5. Early Political Career • Ran and lost Texas Senate seat in 1964 • Ran for House of Representatives in ‘66 won and 2nd term • Appointed U.S. Ambassador to United Nations in 1971 • 1974 Served as Chairman of the Republican Party and Requested Nixon resign

  6. Road to the Whitehouse • Ran and lost to Reagan in 1980 • Became Reagans VP • After two terms as VP ran for Pres. defeated Michael Dukakis • Electoral Votes 426-111 • Was defeated for second term by Bill Clinton in 1992

  7. Domestic Policy • Clean Air Act • “No New Taxes” • Disabilities Act • Had to raise taxes to combat recession

  8. Foreign Policy • Collapse of Berlin Wall • Fall of the Soviet Union • Panama Canal • Operation Desert Storm • Somalia –Black hawk down

  9. Post Presidency • Tries to stay out of the Lime Light • Did unite with Bill Clinton for charity
