  2. The Election of 2000 • George W. Bush became president after winning the 2000 election. • He beat out Al Gore and Ralph Nader. • Bush and Gore were involved in one of the closet elections of all times. • Gore received roughly 500,000 more popular votes then Bush but did not win the electoral vote.   5. Independent and Third Party Voters • A third-party is a political party other than the democrats and republicans. • These parties include independents also. Ralph Nader is an example of third-party candidate. • Nader took many votes away from Gore and Bush during the election. • If he had not ran the election could have had a very different outcome. Gore and Bush both would have received more votes.

  6. Bush V. No Child Left Behind (Cont.) • No Child Left Behind is a program that was put in place by Congress in 2001. • It was proposed by Bush immediately after he entered office. • The policy is based on the theory of standard-based education reform. Which involved established higher standards and different goals • The Cost is about 25 billion dollars per year.

  10. Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) • AYP allows the US Department of Education to determine how each public school is doing academically. Private schools do not have to meet AYP. They base the results on standardized tests. • Schools that do not meet the standards are punished. Requirements of AYP • At least 95 percent of all students are tested for reading and mathematics; • At least 95 percent of all students meet the minimum annual target for meeting or exceeding standards for reading and mathematics, • At least 95 percent of all students meet the minimum annual target for attendance rate for elementary and middle schools or graduation rate for high schools.

Growth of Baby Boomers • After World War II many men returned home and had a child or multiple children with there wives. • There was a huge spike in baby births in the 10 years following the war. • Those kids are now getting older and older.   18. War in Iraq • The military campaign began on March 20, 2003. • The U.S. claimed Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. • There were no WMA’s but the invasion lead to a military occupation and the eventual capture and execution of dictator president Saddam Hussein
