Iraq & Afghanistan Wars 10-7-2001 we invaded Afghanistan – still there • they were harboring Al-Qaeda • overthrew their government called the “Taliban” • we are leaving next summer (2014) 3-20-2003 we invaded Iraq - left at end of 2011 • Bush said they had weapons of mass destruction against U.S. • toppled Saddam Hussein’s government – put in friendly government toward U.S. • Wars cost U.S. billions of dollars – put on credit card

  4. September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attack • 4 planes flew into Twin Towers, Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania • approx. 3,000 civilians killed that morning • 19 terrorists flew the planes • done by Al Qaeda & Osama bin Laden • U.S. launches “war on terror”

Meltdown of the Economy Sept 2008 • Federal Reserve told Congress that a financial meltdown of the economy was happening • Predatory lending programs – subprime mortgages – lending to people who couldn’t afford these homes • Foreclosures / TARP $700 billion bailout to big banks • Stock market falls / Americans lost 25% value of money

  10. How did he change the country • Put the country into record debt. • Led the country through the War on Terror • Established the Department of Homeland Security to facilitate communications and domestic defense.
