Persian Gulf War • Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein invades Kuwait for oil • Bush sends troops to Saudi Arabia with the ok from the Saudi leader • United Nations condemns Iraq and approves economic sanctions • Operation Desert Shield • Desert Storm January 1991 • General N. Schwarzkoph • Push Hussein out of Kuwait but sets oil fields on fire before he leaves, Bush chooses to not pursue him and put him out of power

  3. Panama • To continue war on drugs, U.S. troops ordered into Panama to capture General Noriega and return him to U.S. to face drug charges. • He is sentenced to 40 years in prison

  4. Collapse of Soviet Union • 1989 Berlin Wall comes down • 1990 Boris Yeltsin takes power in U.S.S.R. • U.S.S.R. falls apart • COLD WAR IS OVER!

  5. German Reunification • November 19, 1989 East Germany opens the wall uniting the 2 halves • October 3, 1990 East Germany has 1st free elections

  6. Savings & Loans Scandal • Misuse of funds by Savings & Loans companies • Taxpayers pay hundreds of billions of dollars to bail out the S & L industry

  7. War on Drugs • War on crack cocaine • Emphasize law enforcement • Stop drugs at border • Establishes death penalty for drug dealers

  8. “Read my lips” NO NEW TAXES!” • Built on Reagan legacy • Promised no new taxes in accepting the nomination for president • Stressed conservative ideas • BUT deficit rises and had to break promise because of high number of layoffs and high unemployment.
